How do you fix a bagger that clogs?

I have a Signature 2000 Elite (MTD) Riding Mower came with a bagger off of craigslist I bought last fall. I have never had a problem with the bagger, but it clogs now. I was mowing with it (I do mowing in my neighborhood), and the engine sounded different, like it was on low power. Then it started smoking, so I hoped off and checked it out. The belt was burning from it clogging with grass. After cleaning it, I finished the lawn checked it, and it clogged again. Anybody know whats wrong? It has not done this before.

Was the grass particularly wet. or high?...is the underneath surface of the deck reasonably clean?...you do have to scrape them clean once in a while
at this time of year a lot of lawns have just been fertilized, so they are growing like crazy and we have been getting a lot of rain ......if that is the case...just drive slower and just take half or three quarters of a "bite" so the mower has less to work with and can process and throw the clippings up the chute and into the bags

You mention you got it last fall. I’m dangerously assuming when you determined it worked good, you were bagging leaves. Even mostly dry thick grass is heavier than “normal” (dryish) leaves, and has less surface area (denser), so grass just doesn’t tend to bag as easily as leaves.

Not saying nothing is wrong, but the approach and effectiveness toward bagging leaves and bagging grass may be different.

I use sometime of Mulch Blade when I Bag i.e. Gator/Predator Blades. It does a great Job unless of Coarse it's really wet then It will still occasionally clog even on a power Flow Bagger:thThumbsU

My solution was much like the others, hang the bagger in the shed and mulch!

I've experienced the something using the JD X300 on the property I care take on the grass here grows extremely fast tall and wet. I mowed 2 weeks ago took me two solid 12 hr hr days and 4 truck loads of grass clippings however the lawn looks amazing now. I would much rather rather mulch it but the owner prefers no mulch/clippings on the lawn :). (personally I feel the X300 is a little small for this property.

With all of the rain we've had this spring, and with the fact that I've been too busy to mow more than once every two weeks, I've been having problems with my discharge chute clogging even without a bagger installed. Luckily my X500 has enough power to keep the chute clear if I just slow down a little. I know, I'm impatient, and my wife reminds me of that fact several times a week.

Clogging the discharge chute on an X500.. wow. Impressive.

I've had a bunch of different mowers and tractors, the key is to gauge the amount you are taking off, if it's wet at all and how fast you are trying to move. You learn pretty quick what will clog a bagger. Another thing I have done is take off the bagger and do the lawn, as the grass lays there it does dry a bit. Then mow back over with the bagger. You are mowing the grass twice and cutting it up better for the pickup. You'll still need to consider how easily you clog and adjust accordingly. I like to reach back and tap the sides of the bags to check if they are filling and also feel around the edge to check for the breeze that is created when your blowing air/grass up the chute.

Yeah I tap to see how much is in there too. It is just so weird, never had a problem with it mowing previously. Even on the highest setting, it will clog. It clogs about the middle of the chute. I always mow when the grass is dry. I will mow my own lawn tomorrow, and it is not very tall. If it still clogs, I will have my grandfather check it out.

it amazing how dull blades can leave ragged edges on grass then the grass catches and plugs up. however, in fall when grass is nice and dry , bagging is almost too easy.

Is it because the blades are dull? It mows grass really well, even on a low level.
Dull blades don't help, everything needs to be right for best results, wet grass clogs very quick. Also blades that don't move much air, won't move much grass ether, also air needs a place to escape.
