Good lookin' hood Mike, doesn't even need paint, ready to install.
A little better than the other hood I would say? :biglaugh:

The nose cone has a hinge broken off, but is still in better shape than the one on the tractor so we will see which we will go with. Either way the hood will be the nicest thing on the tractor :hide:

Kinda' figured it was to replace that slightly squashed one we saw in that earlier pic. Will be a good lookin' machine by spring.:tango_face_smile:

Thanks Larry! As long as it is alive by the time we have to sickle mow we will be happy, we can always make it prettier after the fact :)

My thoughts exactly on my Fords as well Mike.

It takes awhile to get everything up to par mechanically, and they are working machines, so paint can always come next year..... or the year after.

Saturday we are making the trip to the states to swap motors with the seller. For the inconvenience he is throwing in the complete exhaust system on the new motor we are getting

In preparation I went out and pulled the carbs off our submarine Onan collection so we can see if one can be made from the 3. Not sure why they designed it that you have to pull the intake runner off to get the carb off :dunno:

When I pulled the carb off the original from the Super Sad 16, and I think the valves would need a little work :sidelaugh. A good replacement motor was the much better solution

So are you picking up a rebuilt motor Mike, or just a good used one ?

Just a good used motor Larry, that was short blocked for us. For the price invested in the tractor, and for how much we will actually use it, we couldn't see doing a rebuild or buying a rebuilt one

hey that is definitely rebuild-able, and looks like you're getting a lot of spare motor parts for the Onan too. I love crusty SS16's, I don't know why... I think I have had as many of those as I have Super 12's.

should be another good rebuild thread!

It definitely is James, we have 3 Onan "cores" if you will that could be rebuilt. We just went a different route due to cost.

This will be our first Onan machine so we are curious to see how it is. We don't like the expensive cost of parts however there seems to be a lot more cheaper alternatives now than when we worked on our friends SS18 a few years back (I'll attach a couple pictures)

Glad to have you on board James, we may have questions :)

Glad to see this thread as I am planning on resurrecting one of these myself. It was my dad's. My mother actually still had the manual from 1976 and maed it up to me. Man they don't make manuals like that any more!!

I've got a really stupid question though. It's killing me because i can answer most of what I'm wondering about once I have it in front of me. (hopefully within a week or 2)

So the manual says it is capable of multiple attachments, but no where does it say anything about PTO? I heard it is electric, but can't find anything in the manual about it.

Figured you would know......

Thnx

Hi usagrown, welcome to MTF by the way! That is awesome that you are saving your Dad's tractor. Please post up a thread when you do, myself and other members will follow along I am sure. Great to hear you have the manual, most are available in PDF download on other sites which is handy since I don't have the one for mine

There is no stupid question, only one not asked! There is no PTO on these machines, as in an electric PTO clutch. These machines use the different engine pulleys and a belt. Every powered attachment uses a "mule drive" or belt tensioning system that is manually connected to the lever that is located near the foot rest. When you move the lever, it tightens the belt and then you have power!

I tried to attach pictures that I had saved for you as I am not near my tractors right now, the first image shows the mule drive for the sickle mower, it uses an idler arm to tighten the belt. The second is the complete sickle mower. 3rd shows the different sized pullies, 4th is the pulley view on the SS/16 and the final picture is a poor picture of the engagement lever in the bottom right corner

The SS/16 will be wearing the sickle mower comes spring

Hey Mikman48 thanks allot for getting back to me!! I will definitely post up pictures along the way. I am so pumped and have been trying to do homework to make things go as smooth as possible.

I totally gotcha about the engagement lever, but what I can't figure is how the different attachments are operated? snow plow, bucket, auger, etc? I've seen on some youtube vids a toggle switch on the dash that moves the 3 point hitch attachments? But i don't see any reference to a switch on the dash in the manual. I haven't taken a good look at the tractor since i was a kid, but i vaguely remember their might be a metal toggle switch , although i might be imagining there was one on ours.

ok i don't wanna derail this thread, so i will post up on one i started already any questions i have. so far everyone has been super friendly and helpful. good people!!

Kind of a coincidence that usagrown bumped my thread today, came home to a message from my ship to address that the 3 point hitch lift links arrived today. My friend who I bought them from was too busy to ship them until recently, so he threw in the arms too as a gift. Spare parts never hurt! He also threw in this hitch reciever (I sent them a toonie with the cheque as a joke so I think they tossed in some americana :sidelaugh). It will find a home on my hitch on my Ford YT16H

Had to look twice when I saw 3ph and lift links Mike.....

There is a Gent in Vancouver building one from scratch for his LGT and I have just this week been sending him pics and measurments.

Here's a link to compare what you have........ starts at post #10.

https://www.mytractorforum.com/71-f...rum.com/71-ford-post-1990-new-holland/261913-ford-lgt-diesel-3-point-hitch.html

I had taken my 3ph off the loader this summer, in favor of a weight box.
Neat Larry I will go catch up on his thread.

My Dad isn't sure if he will even use the hitch on his 16, but I figured it's better to have it in stock and not need it than be hunting for it later. Which is also the reason I have a sleeve hitch in stock for these Suburbans without any implements :hide:

Pops looked thru the carbs and it looks like we can make at least one good carb. Tonight we mounted the engine onto our test stand and pulled the heads to check over everything. Besides some carbon, it looks good. We then tightened it all back up

Once we know that it runs we are going to pull the heads, decarbon, set valves, put in new head gaskets etc, but until we know it is solid we don't want to invest more in it. Tomorrow I am going to raid the parts motors for a valve cover plate, intake rail, coil and wires, and the cylinder head tins. We may be able to test fire it this weekend

Looking great, can't believe I missed this up to now! Too bad you couldn't make the Briggs work on the tiller, it looked to be in great shape.

Mike

Looking like that Onan will live again! I got a NOS set of points and condenser I bought for mine that I never installed, sold it first.
