Which way should the little hooks face .....this way in the picture (outward)

or opposite of the picture (inward , towards the tire)

I always mount mine facing out, like the picture. I'm not sure I ever read that in any directions, but, it just made sense to me, so I've always done it that way.

Outbound of tire rubber. Otherwise the tractor gremlins may allow the sharp ends of the links to rub on your tires causing them to lose air in the bottom of the tires.

Outward even though the young guy at the dealer installed mine inward. I asked him why he did that and he said the head mechanic told him to. [emoji15]I told him and the salesman they were wrong and that I would fix it myself.

Sent from my tractor seat.

If you hit something that is likely to break a chain, a tire is at even more risk.

If it's something that can wedge itself into the cross chain retainer and force it open, I'd much rather that it opened outwards.

My tires are loaded with liquid above the valve. If I air down, I lose about 10-20 lb of ballast from each 26x12-12 tire.

Take your time installing the chains. It takes me 20-30 minutes for each tire by the time I weasel all the cross chains to best layout, and they are tight. Putting all 4 fingers between cross chain and turf tread isn't going to happen, and bungy chords aren't needed. They definitely do not jingle!

The chains stayed on my MF1655 until they wore out (about 8-10 years), and then new chains were installed in the same manner.

I run them outwards.

As for letting air out and making the chains tight I will not. I like my chains snug but not tight. I like the cross links to wiggle and jingle. I think them flexing helps them bite more.

I have a question! Anyone have a video that shows how to install chains on HDAP tires??

I tried for about an hour sitting on a stool (bad back) and trying to get them installed, tight and evenly distributed. Those huge tire knobs were not amenable to installing chains. Might be easier if I took the wheels off, but didnt want to due to same bad back. With any luck, I won't need the chains here in No. Va. We get half a dozen snows, anywhere from an inch to 3' a few years back. Those HDAP tires went ripping right through the snow.

When the snow melted, and became ice - uh oh! I was successful in getting the chains on that time - altho zero fun doing it in the garage with temps in the teens.

do them just like a regular tire.. but don't tighten them up till u get the cross links spaced even.. if they feel lose.. u can take up slack on one side or both sides or the tire..

there is a vid in ##16 postin of this tread.. from watchin it I can tell this guy hasn't installed very many chains too.. the tire he does .. the chains r way too slack.. he needs more slack outta the side chains.. they will unhook themselves if not tight..

I think most people agree they face outwards. But is there a proper side to put the chains on so that the outter link closes forwards or backards. It you watched the video he closes the outter link so it snaps back into the chain facing the rear of the tire.

I was always told that is the proper way because most of you driving is forwards in snow and that can help keep the link from opening up. Anyone every hear this before?

I also put a zip tie on the outter link closure to keep it from unhooking.

You are lucky. I have a 2720 with loaded tires, 4WD and chains on all four wheels and I still have occasional traction issues when removing snow.

I always chuckle because when I bought the 2720 I was coming from an old Ford 9N and the JD dealer was telling me how with 4WD I would no longer need chains.

Right - NOT!

Similar to the gremlins that plague motorcycles. So far nobody has invented Gremlin Bells for tractors that I'm aware of.

I was actually going to do it that way this year but for some strange reason, I was able to get my chains on the first try without the usual fussin' & cussin'.
