Model 49 Snowblower more Auger speed

I have a Model 49 Snowblower Attachment for my 87 316/8. I'm wondering if anyone has changed sprockets or pulleys to get more rotational speed out of their auger to get more throwing distance? I have already added rubber to the auger but would like to get more throwing distance. Anyone out there?

Yeah, I have two blowers the same model. But one is a newer model with a long narrow chute. And it throws about 15-20 feet further than the older short snout chute. I guess blowing snow is a lot like a shotgun. If you want to shoot a goose way up in the air. A longer barrel helps a lot.

However, the narrow chute is terrible with wet sticky snow. I have to carry a stick to unplug it. The old short chute, doesn't plug up with wet snow.

I am using a 34 tooth sprocket on mine with the rubber flap mod. I should have done it when I first got it. Really woke up the thrower and increased distance. About a 30 minute install, took a few links out of the chain. I haven't noticed any less torque for heavy stuff, I feel it does better than ever. Hope this helps. If you need a link for the exact sprocket let me know.

Have you confirmed your engine is running at 3,450 RPM?

RPM's is the most common cause of lousy performance from a 49 thrower. You have to start by making sure your getting proper RPM's. Another thing I would like to note though is these throwers varied a lot over the years. For example, the distance my auger is from the thrower housing is 5/8". A good friend of mine also has a 49 and his distance was from auger to housing was only 1/4". This I'm sure is why a lot of people are perfectly happy with their factory thrower and some prefer to mod theirs to get better performance.

I haven't checked my RPMs at full throttle but I do know it's not lacking when it grabs a bucket load of snow. Unless it's packed snow I normally keeps the throttle just under full. Not knowing how it was treated prior to me saving it from the farm it was found in. My driveway is 1/4 mile long and I cannot say anything bad about this set up! Love this machine!

It has been my experience that even a 100-150 rpm reduction will impact the performance of the blower. IMHO the blower and mower deck should be run at full throttle anytime they are being used.

I have installed paddles on my test model 49 and am thoroughly impressed with improved performance. No need for me to increase speed. As a matter of fact Kyle I do have to throttle mine back at times. I do not have a lot of space between houses in my neighborhood so distance works against me.

There is a formula for gears for figuring out input or output speeds based on number of gear teeth:

(output speed (RPM))divided by (input speed (RPM)) = (number of teeth for input sprocket) divided by (number of output teeth)

There is a similar formula for belts:

rpm (input) / rpm (output) = diameter (out) / diameter (input)
