Just many of the cheaper lineup of engines Briggs makes. All manufactures have cheap entry level engines and there are many similar yet slightly different types. Briggs Inteks, ELS, Professional, ect. Then of course Briggs has made some good ones over the years into more of the commercial line.

You just have to understand what your dollar is buying you these days. A $1500-$2000 machine is not going to be premium anything.
Thank you

I'm a JD fan have owned several, now have a 322 with lots of attachments. but I don't think I'd buy a newer 100 series John Deere. I see way too many for sale that are junk, and they look nearly new. I don't think they hold up very well. I'd look into Husqvarna or cadet or something different. my 2 cents.

They are meant to meet a certain price point and of course quality isn’t going to be all that. Most people don’t need or want a $6000 plus lawn mower. The Deere’s by far are a common unit that share many components with other machines in the class.

People buy the 100 series and since it has John Deere’s name on it they expect them to be a heavy duty tractor. Not the case. They are fine for what they are intended to be.

it's the same as anything.... Ford makes light duty hatchback cars... and they make heavy duty cargo vans.
Both can be used for the same uses such as hauling boxes of goods, or commuting to work...

Common sense dictates that wouldn't buy a $15,000 hatchback to move bags of cement-mix to construction sites... and likewise you wouldn't buy $125,000 cargo van to commute to work with....
And nobody will stop you if you chose to do so...
Both vehicles wear the Ford badge...

So the Deere badge by itself is not / should not be what determines how heavy-duty the machine is.... although some people may think it does.

cheers!

You can laugh at that but I have a friend that owns one that he spent around $1000.00 to have a camshaft repaired but didn't have some kind of oil leak he knew about fixed at same time. Second time he used it (he mows about 4 acres) it seized up and he admitted he knew he was still losing oil but never bothered to check the oil level he even said he told the shop he would replace whatever seal it was that was leaking himself, I don't know what model he has but its the one that has a split crankcase maybe they all do I don't know anything about John Deere riding mowers the name adds too much to the cost in my opinion they are just too expensive so would never buy one.

I agree I thought it was too much and why he never had it all done properly I have no idea he's one of those people that thinks he is saving by penny pinching on the little things I had offered to buy the mower from him before he had it fixed but now its seized I have no interest in it, kind of makes me wonder what else he penny pinched on, on it.

Looking on fb market place, I come across a good looking john deere lt, it was in good shape, guys was asking a 1000$ for it, I said to myself, ok, thats a good price, until I read the description. Description said: everything is good, except, it has a blown engine. so, he is basically selling a john deere for a grant with a blown engine. Whats is wrong with people the area where I live. they are just crazy on the price View attachment 2507684

Well, It should be worth a thousand in parts alone, And if your mechanically inclined even more.

There is always going to be some disagreement over the "value" of a non-runner. I've done a few for parts and a few I've restored of different models. The thing I learned about "parting" a machine out is it takes forever to get everything sold so you have parts all over the place. I still have 318 parts from the one I parted out that I couldn't sell. But I did make a profit on it by selling it that way. I also repaired a 322 that needed a lot of repair, and it needed more than I initially thought so repair costs were much more than expected. So you have to weigh that into any "value" calculation on a non-running machine being bought.

Yes I agree 👍 I have a shipping container full of parts lots of money tied up ..But 90% of the time if I need a part for one I am doing I got it...paying a 1000 for one with a blown engine u might make ur money someday depending on ur location and how bad they need the parts

Yes, but you are in "the business" of repairs, for the "occasional" hobbyist tying up storage space with parts that don't sell can itself be/become expensive.

Yes this is true also ..I wouldn't drop a G on it I could see 500 but a G is not worth tying up in something u have to re do and sell for 12 to 1600 God knows what else it needs ..I have lost my shirt on a few lol

But man I hate flippers. I have heard the yes it was saved reasoning. But most I have dealt with were only in it for the flipping of parts. To me at an auctions they just make for expensive machines. For some of us the difference between the parts scraper man and to keep restore or make operable can be a money breaker.

Not all of us are like that I don't go to auctions as I find u get out bid on stuff that is wore out ....I do the local buy and sell sites...I also sell used parts to help others...
