The Briggs will not be an issue on the rear end. That is the same rear end they used in the GT18 and GT19.9 and the newer motors don't have the same torque that the old ones did IMO. The 1" shaft may be ok- I would just put 2 pulleys on it, they cost about $13-$15 each at most hardware stores. You will need to do some rewiring though. If you can get the wiring harness with the other motor, it would be best- otherwise, find out what it came out of and see if you can find a wiring diagram off the internet. Worse case, you can build one- they are usually only about 12 wires.

Looks like you have a good solid start! That onan may be able to be rebuilt with used parts, abut again, not for $50

I have put used rods and pistons from another motor in one, without honing or anything, and it ran like it was never apart

We will keep our eyes open for a used Onan with the hopes of rebuilding ours. Depending on what we have to do to get the Vanguard in and working it may be how we leave it and sell the onan for parts for someone else's rebuild. Then the SS16 becomes a working tractor.

Thanks for all the input. Still the best site for help and positive feedback.

My son asked me to check the float in the carb in this SS16. It seems that the one in my 18/6 isn't floating like it should. He wanted to know if this one has the brass float. I pulled it off last night and it is the original foam type. I set it in a bowl of water and it floats. I will test it in a bowl of gas to see if it makes a difference. How low in the water or gas should the float sit when testing it?

My son is working on the B&S Vanguard to re-power this with check out is post for comments.

the problem with the foam floats is, when they are dry they float well. When they are soaked in ethanol crap gas, after about 2 weeks they swell up and the sides drag enough to get stuck against the outsides of the carb bowl. Even if it still floats in ethanol gas in a cup or some controlled environment, it will probably still have issues after a little while when it is in the carb. At least that is my experience. I used to have 2 fiber ones that I swapped every 2 weeks in my GT18- it got really annoying.

Again I say this is the best site for friendly advice.

If I am going to swap out a float I only want to do it once! I read somewhere that there have been issues with the brass floats. Is this common? What precautions should I take and where is the best place to get a quality float?

Thanks!

I have bought i think 4 brass floats off ebay, two from ghope and two the other guy, and i have never had an issue with any of them. It's like anything else, you can get one in a batch with too much solder or something. kbeitz was the guy that had a bad one recently. I am not sure if he was able to get his replaced or not.

Believe I read that he was able to send it back and get a new one. Said the people he delt with were did not question him and were very nice.

We bought the brass float for my 18/6 and it is running smooooooth! (I am told as it is still at my son's house working his garden).

He is working over the Vanguard to put in the SS16. We hope to have the engine running and ready to swap by the end of August (we both have travels and additional activities which take priority). The existing Onan will be put into storage for parts or a future rebuild.

I probably will not have new posts for this until the engine is ready to swap out. We are still open to any ideas to facilitate this.

Okay...I am back from 86 miles of backpacking above 10,000'. Time to get back to the tractor.

Engine - Got the Onan out. Removed the muffler for my son to see how/if we can fit it on the Vanguard. He will work on that. With the engine out we can determine the footprint for the engine and what we need to do to fit the Vanguard in.

Rear seal - I got the clip off, in two pieces. Got the hub off, it slipped right off. I got the seal out and on order (NAPA). It is due in on Monday. The current issue is trying to find a new clip to hold the hub on. Does this require a special clip? Can I use a regular "C-Clip". HELP!!! NAPA did not have anything even close.

I got my old tiller (Hahn - Eclipse) out and got it to fire up. Now to work on turning it into a 3pt. This will be an adventure!

Did you drain the tranny fluid before you replaced the axle seal? You should be able to buy a clip ring at a good local hardware store or order them from Sears Parts.

I did not drain the fluid. Is there a reason I should have before I tore into it? There has been an ever increasing puddle under the axle. I jacked it up on that side, put a drain pan under it and pulled it apart. Nothing immediately drained out. After we got the seal out it didn't drain any more...that I have noticed. I will check tomorrow or Monday before I put the new seal in.

The clip is definitely a unique one. If I can't find one like that locally is there any reason I can't use a standard ring?

Well, a fluid change sounds like a good idea especially if it had a big leak. Running without tranny oil will not work out well. You should try contacting a really good hardware store and email them a picture of the clip ring. Ask them if they can order you a box of them.

Have you tried using Google to find some? Try searching for Klip Rings, Poodle Rings, Retaining Rings etc. You need to measure the axle and the notch it goes in for it to work properly. Let us know what you find.

It's kinda easy to simply buy them from Sears Parts and pay to ship them. I'm thinking you would rather not give up the cost of a lunch and would choose to chow down instead of pay what Sears wants for them.

He was able to get a clip, and everything is back together, with no leaks.

I am still working on getting the Vanguard running, but with the new SS14, I've had other things on my plate! So it's looking like next spring before it's going, hopefuly in time for spring planting.
