hi all
i was given a JD 102 tractor and in very good conditon
i know it was from lowes
the lady who gave it to me said her husband was mowing with it and the engine just stopped running and mower was put away
her husband has passed away and she does not know anything about the tractor
has B&S 17hp OHV single cly. 6bsxs 5012vp 276470
the oil on dip stick was below 1/4 in. from the add mark
also missing the spark plug
i have charged up the battery and she will not turn over, just clicks
i can't turn engine over by hand
so i,m assuming the rod blew due to low oil, block did noit crack
i really don't want to tear the engine apart but i might have to
a new engine is out of the question
what used engines can i put in this thing?
can i go lower in horse power? older engine?
i want to give the tractor to my brother to mow his small yard

JD, I suspect the bolt pattern on these engines have not changed in a long time, one of my favorites is the old flat head Briggs.
Lots of old mowers on Craiglist that still run good.
I have mowed with 8 hp and a 44" deck often- you just go slower. I am sure an 11 hp would be fine.

The 100 series frames are designed so you can fit just about any vertical shaft engine in it. Anything from a K series Kawasaki to an Intek or Professional series Briggs (not recommended) to a Command series Kohler...

Unless you are an experienced fabricator you need to use an engine family that was available from the factory. Otherwise you will be making an exhaust pipe. The frame has an industry standard dual bolt pattern set of holes for mounting the engine. The only modern OHV engines not offered in L100 Series were the Kawasaki singles and twins and the Briggs Vanguards . I also don't remember the Kohler Courage motors being offered.

As long as the motor has a 1" crank stub and you can buy a factory ex pipe you are good . The wiring may take some adapting due to lack of a voltage regulator on a lot of low end donor mowers.

If you were not able to rotate the old eng by hand...probably have a seized counter weight on crankshaft.and may not be able to disassemble the engine...thou repairing it would prob be your most economical choice...maybe pull it, open the sump..and see what happened..Lots of used parts on Ebay for these common intek engines..Otherwise, I'd shop Craigs List and mower shops for used BS engine..muffler and exhaust pipe can get pricey if not using same BS OHV family swap....Yes..a V twin will fit..

Find a JD L100 Series unit with a bad tranny and you will have everything you need. I would recommend an L110 with the Kohler Command single or an L111, L118, L120 with the Briggs Intek twins. By doing this you will have the exhaust pipes and muffler needed to make it work. Or take your tranny and put it in the new unit.

As Rayjay said, finding another L1xx with bad trans would be the easiest way to go. I just swapped a B&S 19.5hp opposed twin into an L108 that had a much newer B&S 19hp single.

Make sure that whatever engine you buy has a fuel pump, and get the header/muffler that goes with it. The L1xx series usually have the fuel tank under the seat and need the pump.

just make sure the crankshaft is 1"x 3 5/32" and it'll bolt right on and work but you might have an exhaust issue or wiring needing to be re done if it's a different brand.. MTD with a blown Vari-drive would be great donor and cheap.. Another single cylinder B&S should plug right in to the connector

v-twin will fit. May need trim hood. But hardest part, because of the pulley design. I've seen a guy do his with engine offset to one side to get belt system working right.

today i took the engine apart
found hole in side of block
rod was in pieces
piece broke off counter weight
cam shaft broke
i think crank is bad also
head and piston looks ok but has lots of carbon crud
rings and cylinder , i don't know
engine cover looks good to me but don't know

i know the block can be repaired
but do you guys think i should repair this engine?
a use engine seems hard to come by as a lot of other people are looking for the same
