425 Tires, upgrading to 445 sizes.

Hey guys. The tractor I picked up last weekend has some dryrot on all the tires. I was going to change them out this winter to a rear TruPower and front V61 setup.

In looking at the specifications of the tires for the 425/445/455 I see that they all can use the same tire sizes. I want to upgrade the 425 tires to the 445/455 OEM sizes. I believe they have the same wheels diameter/width. I just want to verify this info . . .

Tires - 425
Front Tubeless 16 x 7.50 - 8
Rear Tubeless 23 x 10.50 - 12

Tires - 445/455
Front Tubeless 18 x 8.50 - 8
Rear Tubeless 26 x 12.00 - 12

Yes and no. The first year 445/455 actually didn't run 26's. Due to great backlash from previous 420/430 owners JD trimmed the fenderdecks so 26's would clear the following year. I can't remember if the 425's shared that trimmed 445/455 fenderdeck or not. Hopefully somone else here can verify or has done the 26" install on a 425.

You can run 26” tires on the 425, however, you may need different rims. Stock 425s came with 23 x 10.5 tires went on 8.5” wide rims where the 445/455s with 26 x 12” tires went on 9.5” rims (M119390).

Same problem up front, 445/455s with 18 x 8.5” tires went on 6.2” rims (AM120003).

I have heard you might be able to mount the larger tires on the smaller rims but I haven’t seen it done. The rears would most likely give you a problem as they would balloon out and not give the flat profile on the contact area, might even hit the deck.

If you do mount the larger tires to the smaller rims post some pics, I’d be interested.

Hum . . . different size rims.

What is the general consensus on the larger tires on the small width rims? Doing a google search of the part numbers jwill provided show that the larger rear wheels are 105 each and the fronts are 70 each.

On a side note . . . out of curiosity . . . is there a database of JD parts . . . CD/DVD or internet based?

Some 26x12 tires will fit on 8.5" rims and some require wider minimum rim size. It's best to consult your intended tire manufacturer directly, to see what needs what. Otherwise, we would really need to know which specific tires you are trying to get fit for a definitive answer. For example, I've put true powers 26x12x12 lugs on 8.5" wide 300 series rims.

It should also be noted that the 26" rear and 18" front are required as a set to maintain current ground clearances. If you only go up to 26" rears, and keep 16" front, you will have a slight rake in your stance afterwards.

I was going to replace the OEM 425 setup with Carlisle TruPower 26 x 12.00 - 12 and the front with Vredestein V61 18 x 8.50 - 8. Universal lift front and back.

How does that sound?

Below is a graphic from the Carlisle website indicating 26x12x12 True Power tires have a minimum rim width of 8.5" -- both the 4 and 8 ply version

I have no direct experience with the V61's, maybe somebody else can help with those, or at least translate some German for you;

Found a great part finder http://jdpc.deere.com

From what I've found . . . the larger tires should work on the 425. It would be great to have to larger rims, but unless I can find a 445/455 part tractor I'm going to have to use the 425 rims.

I'm more concerned with the rears than the fronts, for deck and fender clearance. It might be close . . .

Just got my new tires mounted on the 425 yesterday. The 26x12x12 TruPower's in the rear fit the 8.5" 425 rims fine. Installed them in the wide stance and there are no clearance issues. The 18 x 8.50 - 8 V61's fit fine on the 425 front rims.

I'll post some pictures in the near future . . .

Sweet! Im curious to how you will like the performance of those V61s! My dad's 445 came with the same size tires you originally had and I keep telling him he needs to put some real meat on those rims ;)

I measured the fender deck lip on my two tractors;
1993 425 = 3.5
1996 445 = 2.5

My 425 has an inch less tire clearance. I currently have some 26-12-12 bar tires on the narrower rear rims and they fit nice with enough room for chains. I did try a different brand of tire before that ran a bit bigger (also 26-12-12) and they just cleared did not leave room for chains.

Depending on which fender deck you have, if you ever run chains, and which brand of tires can make a difference.

So I came across this thread, and I have a 455 that does NOT have the AWS and has the 23x10.5-12 Rear/16x7.5-8 Front tires that are original. I was fortunate enough to pick up a plow last fall and as expected, suffered a bit with plowing not having weights and chains. My question is this: Would it be better to get weights and chains, or change to the aggressive tires with weights? I have ~3" clearance around the rear tires to the fenders. Also, I've been trying to find the aggressive tires, and it seems as though there are many types. I'm not sure what would be best.

Thank you for any guidance!

Also, if anyone can recommend a place to pick up inexpensive suitcase weights, that would be great. I'm looking at getting this rear weight bracket - Rear Suitcase Weight Bracket Fits John Deere 425 445 455 | eBay

Well You Might want to consider these for rears 26x12.00-12 Kenda Terra Trac 4 ply Now if You want to stay with the smaller size rear tires they also have them In that size 23x10.50-12 Kenda Terra Trac 4 ply
The weight bracket Your Looking at has some down side to It as it Bolted On the Deere click N Go Brackets( for the X465 thru X758) will work on the Older 425 thru 455 series what is Nice if you decided to Go with a 3point Hitch Ruegg MFG - Agricultural Hitch Kits for Various Tractors then You Can easily remove the click N go weight bracket without tools I would say add wheel weight the HDAP style tire and suit case weights and the 455 will be almost unstoppable Pushing snow with a Blade.

I use to run a 1993 425 I bought used In 2000 Had it for 3 years I would run 26X12 Ags On the rear In the winter and Ran 23X10.50 turfs In the summer But since Deere Came out with the HDAP style I seem to swear buy them even In 2WD ruegg also make some weight Bars for the Cat 0 Hitches if you decided to go that way the 3point Hitch really opens Up a Lot of Versatility with You tractor Just something to consider (y)

HDAPs got the win! I never use chains, just plenty of ballast on my 455 for winter use. Never had an issue with traction yet.
