ARP...good stuff...

put it in your hand...you can literally feel the quality of the product.

there is a LOT of science into fasteners far to much to delve into here.

I am quickly learning that, I spent almost an hour last night poking through various websites :thThumbsU

EDIT: when I get to this point in the 65 resto I will do a lot more research and post up some part numbers for everything. That way there is a little more of a record of what I did.

Here is the skinny on the studs... stopped by a couple places over lunch to look for suitable replacements.

What I need:
Overall length: 2.5 or 3 inch studs 3 inch is for the hydro bracket, 2.5 is normal from what I can tell.... even though the part number is not different
Thread is 5/16 18 (sorry if that is the incorrect nomenclature) I need 1/2 inch of thread on one end and at least an inch on the other.... 1.25 might be needed depending on how accurate I measured this morning.

This would be the closest I have found so far but they are too short. I did find a 3 inch stud today but the threads were the wrong 5/16 24??? I think.....

and its a pack of 10!

Also found a couple others but they are Grade 3...

Did you try McMaster Carr.
I'm on a smartphone so I can't check it.

That would be my next advice---Did you say the JD dealer wanted $21 for the two studs? Huh?

ok with dimensions I'm on it. I'll see what I can find.

Qafarm, I read your info and that is very knowledgable and helpful. If I were doing a full rebuild, I might go this route. But for my money, I'm going to pick up some new grade 8 bolts out of the bolt bin at work and install them. I've used them before and they work for me. I'm glad Mr. B purchased new ones so he can feel good that he eliminated that as a possible problem and I can compare his results.

Hey Kyle, not that i'm glad you are having to deal with this but at least you are leading the way on this. Makes up for not leading on the restore. :sidelaugh

just think...you could make that on a lathe!!!! out of A2 of something...

by the way...about the "resurface" on the heads you could have done that with a DA sander.

still, hoping this fixes you up:)

That's funny, I was thinking the same thing about the sander.

Here is a question. QAFarm pointed out that there are fine thread studs (one end) out there (I even bought 2 yesterday for $2.47, breaking the bank right :ROF). I also think they would be a little better in terms of torque. However, would having the studs with fine threads on one end of the block closer to the S/G impact the head? The rest of the head bolts are 5/16 18..... so they would torque differently.... correct or am I hittin the sauce a little hard this early in the AM?

Still going to use the Deere studs in this case, but really dig into this for the other engine.

:fing32: Yeah, I am learning a lot in this process as well.

I probably could have done it on a sander, even looked at my bench sander and my DA..... BUT this boils back down to the wanting make sure I eliminate as many issues as I can. I really like to do as much as I can myself, but the leak could be many things, last thing I want is for it still to leak and not know the cause.

That is very understandable. At this point I would probably do what you are doing.

yea mixing thread patterns is not a great idea on torque critical application. it gets back to the HUGE amount of science....

non torque critical fasteners will not hurt a thing:)

Mr B you are right about the different torque values with different threads. When I do the 16 hp kohler in my shop (future replacement for the 214 engine) I will switch them all to studs:dunno:

Picked up the studs. Here is the kohler part number 232810-s

With that part number Deere is actually cheaper than a lot of other online sources. :ROF now why is this stud sooo expensive? Well I think kohler is the only source for this particular stud... Either 2.5 or 3 inch. I still have some searching in the high performance area and I am sure there is a ton more experience floating around here than what I have.

5/16-18 right? fastenall probably has something similar. that thread is also standard for carburetor mounting in auto applications.

but the OE part is likely the best aside from an ARP product. they OEM spent the time and money on the research and testing. as has ARP

that all gets back to my earlier comment about using hardware store stuff on torque critical components.

and, studs are usually installed DRY,HAND TIGHT. of course follow reference the manual. :thThumbsU

Found some time to get the 110 back together. I THINK the issue is fixed. Still need to re-torque the head to double check. A short video:

looks good and sounds GREAT! hopefully that is the end of that drama.

Sounds really good!:fing32: Now did you some sort of no oil leak/no head gasket fail dance around the 110? :sidelaugh
