Most filter mount nipples are screwed into the housing. Maybe someone changed the nipple?
Never though of that...

Hugh can you get some pictures? Maybe infact someone changed the housing for the filter. Know knows where Ed got the tractor originally...

It doesnt APPEAR that anyone did, but yes I can get pictures. I am going to try another new filter from Napa to see if maybe I got one with bad threads.

Maybe since Sears Parts said the OEM filter is NLA the PO of the Hydro might have retofitted the nipple like you guys are thinking.

Did or does Stripmine own a GT18 Hydro? Does Stripmine's have a one inch nipple also?

Went to change the oil in the 18 Hydro today, and the old filter came off just fine, but the new filter, Napa 1551, did not want to thread on. Old one threads on no issue. New one wants to but cant make it past a half turn.
That is not a case of 3/4" vs. 1" threads. It might be a case of metric vs. SAE threads, or, as suggested, miscut threads in the filter.

That housing is an inline house right? Maybe someone swapped in a new style filter housing mount?

12X1 threads are coarse enough that you should be able to confirm/deny with a ruler. 6 "peaks" per 1/2". (actually 7 if you count peak to peak)
Ditto for the 1" dimension if you have a caliper.

Also, you might measure the ID of the filter with your caliper. It should be 15/16". (.9375") or so

Good thinking. I would have to say, "Ditto." :ditto:

Since Hugh works at John Deere I would suggest he tinker with the thought of finding the correct inline housing or filter assembly.

Personally I'd just find another housing that will fit and swap on a filter that is super easy to get...

:ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto::ditto:

I think they sell an assembly with a filter included. Hmmmm...maybe any of the previously mentioned makes and models I provided.

I would guess its 1" x 14 thread if his 1" x 12 thread filter goes on a half turn and jams up..or mertic maybe..

I have a diesel fuel filter I bought thinking it would have fit my GMC ,it was close but no cigar--it has 1" x 14 threads ,but my filter base is 1" x 12 thread....
I take it there is no number on the old filter??..and your just going by what a manual said fit it originally..

TH- no numbers on the old filter. OEM number crosses to a filter thats not even close to fitting. The 1551 filter is one that stripmine had used before and said fit.

Sounds like things are still unclear. Is there a way you can take a snap-shot of the width of the nipple with the measuring tape showing the diamter of the nipple's threads?

STF and I were kinda thinking the nipple housing might have been swapped for another size with a filter that was available. Who knows?

They're not the same filter according to one of the pics (side by side shot).

Either the new one is taller, or it's larger in diameter. There is a coil spring in the new one but I can't see one in the old filter. The number of supply holes around the ring are probably manufacturers choice.

The threaded holes look to be the same diameter, but not the same thread. If the new filter is taller, parallax should show different hole diameters commensurate with the overall diameters.

You are correct, the new filter is taller.

And Bill that is a good idea I will try that.

Just measured threads at napa, both old and new filters are 1"x12. I will try cleaning the threads tonight with a file and die
