I took a road trip Saturday. The kind that are always fun. I brought home an 816.

As I have learned more about these machines I came to realized the 816 is the 800 series tractor that I want to own at some point I was in no hurry and in fact had not found the time recently to look through the CL listings. One of the things I wasn’t sure of was, I do not want, at this point to own an Onan.

I know their reputation for quality and power, but also parts are harder to source and are expensive. I have read several times about 1 style of engine having 3 different starters – that only one will fit – if you have the correct of 6 different possible mounting brackets! Whew! OK OK I exaggerate…. A bit. With my experience level at this point . . . .not on the Onan. Sorry Richard, I know of your admiration for them.

So….. There I am just taking a peak at Gravelys locally. Near home and in VT as I go there regularly. Up pops an 816. It is powered by a M18 S – badged M16. Now this engine I know. I own and work on that exact model and spec and also have an M20 S on my 20G – pretty much the same engine. I started researching.

A big shout out “thank you” to lt4xtreme :fing32:and Yamoto72 :fing32:for both sharing their extensive knowledge, and answering all my questions. Both as everyone knows have restored 816s. I’ve even got to see Jasons, where I heard an Onan for the first time. And both were very generous with their time. I was able to get real informed real quick.

I was able to come to an agreement with the seller. This is the first “runner” I have purchased. I drove it on my trailer at pickup and drove it off my trailer at home. I drove it to the spot I use to degrease a tractor, where it is already undergoing some tlc.

It was sitting in the rain (ouch) when I reached the location, and true to what was represented about it started right up. It sounded great, but wants about ¾ choke once warm to run– no evident smoke – was evidence of hunting – will need carb clean at minimum. I know how to deal with that. Been there done that as they say. And right there is a big part of why I let the GAS flare up. I makes sense to me to have similar engines on my workers, with exchangeable parts and common knowledge needed to maintain them.

So the bad first. It does not have splined clutch shafts, rather the older keyed style. It does not have R&P steering. Now that I’m digging in to it, at least one axle hub needs to be replaced. I’d be surprised if that is not true of the other side as well. It is cosmetically pretty ugly. The seat is trash.

The good. I am very satisfied with what I paid for it. Because it has sector steering and keyed clutch spindles, it is likely to have the posi track transaxle. Which in my opinion ads to the value of updating the clutch spindles.

It has Front attachment brackets, a front PTO shaft, rear PTO axle block with no PTO shaft, a real nice set of Carlisle Turfmasters, and nice Carlisle front tires. It's already cleaning up nicely.

Additionally it has an older style 50” mower deck in decent shape. I plan to go over the deck and put it in the mowing rotation up in VT immediately. I don’t mind old style and am willing to take the trouble of greasing the spindles underneath. Once I can go over the fundamentals of the tractor it may go to VT for some chores this season. Come Fall i will commence restoring it to a one-of-a-kind 816.

It’s a story for another day but my tractor was a 1 owner. The current engine was purchased new for $3000 and installed on the tractor a few years ago. It was ordered with the turned down shaft to fit a Gravely. Also there is evidence I believe that the trans has been apart. Did I mention the new style M18 S?:tee:

Congrats Al. Looks like a match made in heaven. You'll have that 816 in good shape quickly.

Not a bad looking tractor at all Al. With the keyed clutches, yours should be close to the same age as mine. It should have the limited slip differential in it too. If you can find the thread on mine, I'm pretty certain Ron C. posted the serial number cut off for the limited slip. I'm on my phone right now so if you don't find it, I'll dig it up for you this evening.

Without opening a can of worms or a big debate, mine has the keyed clutches and have had no trouble out of them at all. There a little more to lubricate for the maintenance side of things but the performance has been top notch. Adjusting them takes a little longer too but it isn't hard at all.

I was extremely fortunate when I found I had a bad hub on my 8123 in that Marc hooked me up with a replacement at an extremely reasonable price. While not as well priced, there are several on EBay now in the $60 range.

Congratulations Al. You did good for the money. :fing32:

Al, I hate to tell you, but you're an addict. Here's how I know and I quote:

"And right there is a big part of why I let the GAS flare up. It makes sense to me to have similar engines on..."

Al thinks:
"Ah, yes. It just MAKES SENSE to buy this tractor because it has the same kind of engine as my other tractors. Don't they SEE?! I mean, how could I NOT buy that tractor since it has that engine on it? Fools, they'll never understand.":00000061:

That's like my reasoning when I want another mint julep: "Well I need to keep the mint picked down so it doesn't get bitter so I really NEED to make another julep to keep the plants healthy." Right, I'm doing it for the plants.

Or how about: "Well my shoulder is only getting worse and rather than have surgery I NEED to get that new impact wrench so I can snug up those bolts (and remove some others) without causing me so much pain. Plus the wrench I already have just doesn't get tight ENOUGH (whatever that means)"

Hee, hee, we love our toys (and our Bourbon)

Have to admit, I MAY have thought that . . . . exactly....... Love your humor Ralph. :sidelaugh

Congrats, Al! Fine addition. You've gathered a nice group of tractors :fing32:

Yes Congrats AL!!! One from each generation 800, 8000 and a G series!

Good grab Al - you do realize your condition is now chronic -GAS

I would have more than one tractor too - but already have a hobby like that - 140 model train locos, 850 freight cars, .........

But I'm still looking for a few choice attachments for the 18-GLX!

I think Ron C posted the serial number cutoff for the LSD in my 816 thread. I think the data plate is attached to the adapter plate, so I believe it would be long gone on your tractor due to the engine swap. My tractor was made after the cutoff although I haven't inspected it or tested it to be sure that it just has an open differential. Your tractor may have the LSD if it's early enough. Nice grab all the same with some goodies on it to boot :fing32:

Every time I do something like this I think. Sheldon's gonna think I'm nuts. But as you correctly observe it has become a hobby. I'm getting more focused on what i want as i learn more. I will want to run a cultivator for example - NOT going to do it walking up and down the garden. Not now.

Like somebody on here says on their signature - i can quit anytime.

Al,

A few simple things keep me from being aflicted with GAS:

1-My perfectionist nature would require each new addition to be fully restored to like new condition and equiped with all the features of the 18-GLX, or better.

2-While I have great respect for those who do, I am not suitably motivated to till the soil to grow food.

3-I only have this one acre of land to mow and care for, and only this one driveway in this usually temperate climate to sometimes move snow off of.

4-First I would have to go buy a trailer to bring them home on.

Now a change in item 3, could then require item 4, which could lead a need that could be fullfilled by item 1.

But item 2 is only likely in the event of total social collapse.

AND, one little model train looks a lot like the next one to the untrained eye (wife) - tractors on the other hand are bigger and easier to count - requiring some justification for their existance beyond simply being "fun" or "cute" - the female reaction to a model train.

If #2 became reality due to that scenario, we probably wouldn't have gas to operate them with.

You are correct wives will never see Gravelys as fun or cute.

As for being easy to count :dunno: I'm starting to have problems with that!

I think your GAS aversion strategy is well thought out Sheldon.

I think that an Onan P224 would be a nice upgrade.

Actually, my wife is one of the lucky ones that doesn't see my tractors at all. Her eyes are rolled too far back into her head when I even mention one to see it. :biglaugh:
