X738 Mower Deck Options

When purchasing a new X738, what are the options for mower decks? If you don't get the drive over (54HC?), do you get the Edge Xtra deck that is normally installed on the X300/X500 series tractors?

Also, is the drive over deck really worth the extra money vs. the regular deck?

You get the 48inch Accel deck Model 48A if you don't go with the 54inch or 60inch HC Deere does Not Produce a Non drive over deck In the 54 or 60 Inch decks for the signatures series. I really miss my 48C deck that I had On my X485. I went with a 54C deck for my X748. But the older 48C did a better Job cutting and the 48inch decks are fairly easy to maneuver when off the tractor:thThumbsU

I have a leveling problem now with my 54" HC deck. I've reached the top of the threaded bolt on the left side and can't raise it enough to get the leveling plastic "tool" to slide under the deck.

This deck is easy to remove/install but the finish cut is fair/good and now the level limit has been reached on the left side. I don't recommend it.

A friend of mine had the same issue with his X730. After some tinkering, we added a 1/2" thick nut in between parts 25 & 27 on both sides. Doing that that added more useable adjustment range and solved the problem.

I ordered the 48 accel deep with my 734 and have been very pleased with the cut vs my 48 edge deck.

Hi Matt,
I can't comment on the smaller decks but when I was searching for a deck to fit my X738, I had good advice from the members on this forum.
Most members told me to go with at least the 54 inch deck since a smaller deck would not be as wide as the tractor and you can't cut grass close enough to edging, etc., if the wheels hit it first.
It was great advice and I love my deck!

Non discharge side is out far enough for trimming on the 48inch decks. The deck is actually wider than the tractor By a Inch. I had a 48inch deck for 11 years On a X485. If I had to do it over again when I Bought the used X748 with 54inch deck I would Have swapped the 54inch On to the X485 and Kept the 48inch deck Because it cuts so Much Better than the 54inch:thThumbsU

Thank you for all the responses. The dealer installed a 54" Edge Xtra deck, which JD doesn't list on their site. The Edge Xtra deck is ~$400 cheaper than the 54HC drive over deck without auto connect, add in auto connect and it is ~$700 more for the 54HC. The dealer told me JD doesn't advertise the Edge Xtra for the X700 series because they want people to pay for the more expensive deck. Since the X500/X300 use the Edge Xtra deck and are considered great mowing machines and I don't really need the auto connect, I went with the less expensive Edge Xtra deck. I also don't have a large lawn to mow, so long term durability of the 54HC vs 54 Edge Xtra shouldn't be an issue. I went with the X738 due to a steep hill and for snow plowing abilities.

I am still learning the ins and outs of the tractor/mower...I did some nice scalping yesterday :) Need to figure out what height works best for my lawn, hills, etc. as well as how to adjust the wheels to their proper height.

Here are some pictures of the 54" Edge Xtra installed on the X738.

I believe the way you set the gauge wheels is to have them just high enough to slide your fingertip under it when the deck is all the way down (on a flat surface).

I'm sure your Edge Xtra deck will serve you well. It looks a lot like the 54" deck on my 345 that worked great for 20 years. I will say that the 60HC on my x758 is WAY beefier than this Edge Xtra though. The 60HC seems to be designed like a 7 Iron that is made with 9ga instead of the 7 Iron's 7ga steel. Has a similar big, thick bar around the outer edge for stiff structure. And, of course, the drive-over capability.

Speaking of drive-over, how does this deck install? do you turn the wheels and roll it out the side like a 345 deck?

I thought the same on the auto connect ... Worth it? After having it. YES! The decks are heavy and the auto connect driver over is a dream and would never go without it on any future machines. Did you get to try a drive over auto connect? I think the deeper deck of the HC is better than the edge however I had a edge 54" and they are awesome decks! It will do a great job for you.
