X540 Safety Interlock Problem

I have an older x540 that appears to be having a problem with the safety interlock system. The tractor starts fine. However, I cannot engage the PTO. I also noticed that getting off the seat no longer kills the engine and also I can start the engine without the brake pedal depressed. Since both the seat switch and brake switch don't seem to be functioning as they should along with the PTO not engaging I suspect the problem is the Electronic Control Module is not functioning as it should, but the curious thing is it starts fine. I did test the seat switch with an ohm meter and it seems to work as it should. Any other thoughts of what the problem might be before I replace the electronic control module?

Thanks,
Mark

Did you check the break switch also.

yes a bad brake switch will cause every one of your symptoms. The machine "thinks" it is in park with the brake set so it will not allow the PTO to come on but will let it crank with no one on the seat.

I here is the switch/wire colors. if the switch is stuck "on" then A should read a short to C and B short to D.

You were absolutely right. My switch was shorted as you had indicated. To verify, I started the engine and then pulled off the connector to the brake switch (simulating taking my foot off the brake) and the PTO engaged as it should. Thank you very much for your help. Now to replace the switch. What a pain that they riveted the switch in.

Thanks again

Since that's a safety issue, even if it's out of warranty, you might be able to get JD to pay to repair it, especially because it's riveted in and it's not expected that a consumer would be able to replace it. Mention that you might need to contact the Consumer product Safety Commission about a possible recall because of the safety issue and I'm thinking that they might become real nice and offer to replace it at no charge as long as you don't get the "pesky" government involved.
