i know i havent posted much on this machine. i been busy with work and other things breaking down. then i been working on this when i have time. i got this a month ago from my boss with a locked up tec 10 hp cast iron well i put a 8hp briggs on it that i replaced governor and shaft in. i found a engine pulley for it (off a 66 custom 6). i got in contact with a guy oh about roughly a good 80 miles away he had a grille that i wanted for it. so i sent him a check and well grill showed up today so i measured and cut a section out like my dads compact 8e then i put it together. next week electric start will be put on this machine. i tore out old harness. some pics are of my dads compact 8e basically shoing what i had to cut out

bought a oil dipstick and tube off ebay today.

#10 ·
had a little electrical connection issue with it traced it to fusebox i used on it. so i replaced it with another used one and it fixed my issue.

Good deal!! Love real headlights! Wish all machines had them!

so yesterday my ss14 was giving me issues (kept fouling plug from oil consumption does anyone know the number of a anti fouler for the cast iron flatheads, i dont have money to do a ring job right now) so i put the 3 point hitch on the st10 and finish plowing garden. then i graded it down so its not so rough incase we get a big dead tree down this fall. well this morning my dipstick and tube came in for the st10. i had a new seal for a dipstick sitting in a gasket set that we didnt use for a different engine so i used it here lol

I've never tried using a non-fouler on a one cylinder engine yet--not sure if it'll run with one,I know on car engines they will reduce power,I tried using a set of 8 on a very tired 283 Chevy and it refused to even start!...a magneto spark might not be powerful enough to fire thru that small hole in the non-fouler..

I have used H-10C Champions or L-86C Champions in worn engines that smoked and fouled plugs, ones that take a J-8C plug or J-17LM --I just doubled up on the spark plug gaskets...I didn't burn the piston or anything,so I'd say its "ok" to do on an engine your not too worried about..

They also sell special spark plugs for engines using a lot of oil--"Aldor" is one brand I have seen in a few stores locally that claims to "never foul"..

I tried them in a few cars I had,and they never had to be replaced or cleaned off,so they must work, but in reality,I bet they are just hotter heat range plugs...

Some oil thickener like Lucas or STP might help a lot to reduce the fouling too..

my boss was given a kohlor command twin nd someone put some anti foulors on it it ran but hey its only 3.99 for two anti foulors at auto zone lol and i also got a rear light for the st10 and put it on. its a blazer brand light i bought wish it was a pm 102 like what was on it but oh well same size and everything

If you try the non-foulers you'll need the ones intended for an old engine with a gasket, not the tapered seat style plugs (though I've used tapered seat plugs like R45t AC's from a GM car in engines that use a J-8 or similar reach plug, they are almost the same reach and heat range, and the lack of a gasket didn't seem to be a big deal)--old Chevy small blocks like pre-1969 V8's used the gasket style spark plug..maybe the non-foulers for those will work, just be sure they dont contact the piston!--turn it over slow by hand first and feel for any resistance..

i had a head with me when i went to auto zone they said i could screw one in to test how it was i did and no issue. i got home installed the anti foulor and it fired up and ran good. had a little backfire but atleast it runs where i can use it longer than 3 minutes lol. well sunday ill put snow plow back on ss14 and let it run for a while i do some work and see how it runs for longer periods

The non-foulers basically just shield the electrodes from the oil,and also increases the heat range of the spark plug by making it run hotter, due to the added area of metal the heat has to transfer through to get to the head and cool the plug off...so dont try using a hotter heat range plug AND a non-fouler,or it could harm the piston or head..

I would run it awhile under normal loads, then pull the plug out and see if its burning clean,if its a white color it is too hot..ideally it should be a brownish red color if the carb is adjusted right and there isn't a ton of oil passing by the rings..

If your engine sat a long time without being run, dont be surprised if the oil fouling eventually lessens and any smoking is reduced,it could just be the rings are stuck to the piston grooves, and running it just might free them up..if its just old and worn out, thats a different story..

well tractor-holic this 14hp on this ss14 has had a carb screw at some point dance on piston there is a dent in top of piston. i know engine sat for a few years. i cleaned off piston and changed head (with new gasket also) ealier this year did notice alot of piston movement that was not normal (has top end knock from piston slap)

well photos will be posted tonight. but i put different fenders on the st10 along with a toolbox. it took me a couple hours because i had to beat them straight. they came off a 73 st12 junker a couple years ago. fenders and toolbox is off little st12 in first picture. http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=250352&highlight=st12

well here they are progress pictures. alot of hammering was done to get these 3 item back in shape. i like doing this work its always fun. next year tractor will be taken apart to paint it up and freshen up the engine (new piston, rings, connecting rod, valve job, gaskets).
