Hello again... I'm new to this Lawn Boy stuff... But I'm learning to listen to everyone talking about how good they are... So I'm watching for good deals... This is what I picked up at the swap meet last weekend... The first picture of the mower I got for $5.00 It needed nothing and works great... The second picture of the mower I got for $20.00 and it's self propelled ... It gave me a hard time... I found that the hose to the pumper had a vac leak and the engine would hunt and quit... After a new hose it runs very good but the drive slips a lot and I have the adjustment up all the way... Would new wheels help??? Do the tires get small enough to cause it to slip???... This third picture of the 4.5 gold searies mower base I got for $10.00 and it's new new... No engine block but it has everything else and its electric start and self propelled ...So did I get a super deal or what???
Oh... One more question... Will the engine from a non self propelled work on a self propelled base or does it need a drive shaft???

Good deal Kevin i have a Lawn-Boy mechanic's handbook for the D-400 & D-600 F series engines and also Compliance mower manual if you want it. Just PM me your address and i will ship it to you free. I don't have my Lawn boy anymore so i don't need it. And seeing your getting into them heavy maybe something you can use.

:congrats: Nice looking mowers, kbeitz! You did real well, especially with the first one. As for the self propelled one, I'm not real familiar with OMC's capstan drive system, so this is just a guess, but have you checked the drive rollers to see if they're worn?

Regarding engines, the answer to your question depends on which mower you're talking about. If you're talking about the one in the second picture, an engine from a non-SP unit won't work because the crankshaft was unique to SP units during the era of OMC's capstan drive system. On the other hand, if you're talking about the mower in the third pic, then an engine from a non-SP unit will work---all you'll need is to add the belt pulley and set screw to the crankshaft.

Enjoy your new toys! :fing32:

You did great :congrats: ! On the 10515 (may not be the exact model, but it is close), yes, you can put a motor from a non self propelled unit on this deck. You can turn it into a self propelled just as Tarheelman said. Find and add a pulley to the shaft and the coversion is ready to assemble. Good luck. :goodl:

Man what a deal! Sigh....

On the 10545 you will probably need an engine with starter if you want to set it up complete unless you got the starter too. Some flywheels are not setup for starters and some engine cowlings arent made with the starter opening. Just a couple things to look out for.

Good catch Fordtech. I skipped right over the electric start. 10545 would be the model number.

Kbeitz, on that mower the model tag is on the back of the plate in the handles where it says it is a Gold Series. Wish I had known you were going to need parts for one. I just tossed two good flywheels from electric starts. :banghead3

More questions...
Now I'm ready to put my junkyard mower motor model R7268 on my new deck model 10545 but I got a few problems... Let me first start with the drive ... There is a cable running down to the tyranny with a spring on it that I think is suppose to hook to a lever on the tyranny... Look at my picture and you will see a bracket that I drew on the picture to show what I think what is missing...Am I right ??? New question... Look at the second picture and you will see that I dont have room to put a pulley on the shaft to drive the tyranny... Do I need a different base???

Thanks to all for your help...

Kbeitz,

Bad news is yes, I think you need a different base. Good news, is I think I have one. Send me a PM with your address and I will see about getting it to you.

yes your bracket is missing for the trans cable hook-up. i dont have an extra one but it should be cheap if you have to buy it new. you will have a great mower when this project is done. best over all lawnboy model if you ask me. i have an elect start one and no i dont use it. it starts so easy with a pull -i let the batt go bad. one of my M does have it and i use it. (at least till its batt goes bad)

I do have the base needed for your project. What I do not have is the muffler for the base. It is different in that one of the muffler bolts is wider from the crank than the other two. If you have this muffler then, you can have the mounting plate.

Let me know

Kevin --

I just checked out your photos with the annotations on them with the circles and arrows showing what each one was.

Please refrain from using such helpful visual aids in an attempt to have your questions and concerns answered. We have a very strict (albiet unpublished) procedure used for questions such as yours which seems to work fine.

In the future, please refrain from posting detailed and useful photos. Instead, make vague references to "the round thing that looks like something should be going to it" and "should it be a little closer (compared to other vague item) than the other thing,"

You get the idea.

Keep posting photos like that and some of us are bound to figure out what it is we're talking about

You know. I was meaning to bring that up to you lawn boy guys. :D :D :D

I STILL have no idea what that round, disc, coupler thing is you guys keep pounding off is. :D :D
It's the blade spacer, a square metal plate with a hole for the crankshaft to pass through. I have no idea why OMC put that on Lawn-Boys, unless it was to test owners' patience in trying to get the *%#!@* thing off in order to remove the muffler and clean the exaust ports. Moreover, I don't know why Toro continued to use the blade spacer when the took over L-B, unless it was for the same reason. :fing20:

One of my jobs at my work place is to make special tools every day to do new never before setups on textile machines... The hardest job I found to do is to remove bearings in machines when the shaft does not come out and there is no way to get at the back of the bearing to tap it out... Just try removing a 4" od bearing when you cant grab it pull it or pound it out and heat is a no no so no torch...

Isn't the reason for the design of the plate and collar assembly to lessen the chance of a bent crank in case some careless idiot (like me ROF ) mows over a stump or somethin'?

Could be...but I'm not sure how it would do that.

Myabe if it was torqued down to whatever proper specifications are, it would be able to "break free under stress?"

(hard to imagine after what it takes us to get them apart with INDUCED stres....)[/QUOTE]
