OK Johnsonmk, you thought this old dog would be worth fixing. Turns out you were correct. I was a little leary of the mower because it had been left outside without any cover over the carburetor. The front wheel posts were rusty and would not lock in or out without force. The deck has some surface rust and the mower looked like it had been introduced to a leather boot because the pull rope broke and the previous owner could not start it any longer. Well, I found all the parts to put it back together. It runs good and strong. Mowed the entire yard with it today. Mulches like a champ. This is my first experience with wheels like this (except for a shopping cart) and it is a real odd experience to mow with front wheels that "Steer"! All in all it is a good mower. May keep it as my daily grunt machine. :fing32: This of course is not cleaned up to my standards, but I will take care of that in a couple of days.

Those things remind me of a spider. :biglaugh:
It's remarkable that these mowers can survive
all the mistreatment they receive.
You did a great job bringing the beast back to life. :congrats: :thThumbsU

:congrats: Great job getting it running again, jwor! How does that engine compare with the pre-Intek OHV Briggs engine on your Medallion (10533)?

The one on the 10533 makes less noise and seems smoother. Both seem to have a lot of torque for a 4 cycle. The Intek does seem to be stronger, but then it is rated at 6.5 VS 5.5 on the 10533. The Deere does a nice job of cutting and mulching. My grass is thick and this thing just chopped the clippings to a near powder and left a nice smooth yard behind. I have more work to do on this mower. The front wheels do not lock out easily so, I will need to work on that. I am not going to concern myself too much (I don't think) with the appearance of this mower. It will be used to do everyday cutting.

I know it ain't a LawnBoy, but when new, that Deere was quite a mower. I'm glad you got it running and it's doing well, and that you rescued it from it's abusive owner :D

Considering the fact that the previous owner kept this mower outside for most of its life, I'm not surprised that the front wheels don't lock out easily. The whole assembly for those wheels is probably rusted---have you tried 3-in-1 Penetrant, or PB Blaster, or some other kind of penetrant on them yet? If not, that might help loosen things up. Otherwise, it'll probably need new front wheel assemblys to work properly.

It never ceases to amaze me the lack of respect that most folks show to lawn mowers. :eck16:

Yes, I have had the entire assembly apart. There is a marked improvement, however more needs to be done.

I can not understand anyone leaving a fairly expensive mower outside. :hide:

LD, John Deere dealer within 5 miles of the house.

Went out yesterday and did a lot of TLC to the ole deere. Also took a picture of the yard like okgrassguy did. Since, our house has now sold. I thought I would show off a little. :thThumbsU

:congrats: Thats really a neat looking mower jwor, very nice job, I did'nt know JD even made push mowers, so this is something new to me, thanks for posting it :fing32:
They actually make quite a few. Well, they put their names on a few. Not sure who actually built this one. Could actually be a JD. There are three versions of this mower. One with the casters on the front one with out (looks like a regular mower) and one identical to the non caster one that has Scott's name on it. The last was sold primarily at Home Depot. All are very good mowers. This one does a heck of a job mulching. :thThumbsU

The aluminum deck JD push mowers (JA62 & JX75) are made by Deere. The steel deck ones like yours were made by AYP for Deere. The new ('06 model) steel deck JD push mowers are made by Snapper for Deere, so Deere's steel deck units have definitely moved up the food chain for '06.

BTW, nice yard---and congrats on selling the house! I assume your security system is going to be moved to the new house. I've got one just like it and, if I was moving, I'd move it to the new house along with the furniture. :)

His name is Chance and yes, he will be going with us. He is a great pet with one vice. He likes to dig. I think for the most part, he is looking for a cool place to lay, but today he dug his way out of the fence. I was in the front and he could hear me. I think he was just trying to get to me. Any suggestions on how to make him stop digging?

Thanks for the comments on the yard. It has been a real challenge this year since, we have been in such a drought. Had to keep it nice though, made the home show better for potential buyers. :eek:mg:

Yep, house sold. In fact it sold too fast. Wife will not stay in an apartment while the new house is built. We chose an inventory (spec) home. The 3rd car garage will not be there, but we will have 530 more sq ft in the home. All for the same price as the home we were going to build. It is a spec as I mentioned and they (Drees Homes) wants to get it off their books. So, we are going to help them out. :thThumbsU

The yard BTW was done this time with the 10552 set at the highest level. That is one trick to use during the hottest driest part of the southern planes summer. Cut high, water deep and fertilize often. Just thought I would offer the Jwor recipe for lawns. :sidelaugh

I didn't think you were supposed to fertilize when it is real hot? Water yes and cut it high yes, but it looks like it's working for you. I like the looks of your JD, those front wheels kind of give it the Praying Mantis look.

Aside from catching him in the act and fussing at him, I don't know of anything that'll stop a dog from digging. They enjoy doing this, although some of them enjoy it more than others.

Congrats on the new house---it sounds nice! Too bad about not getting an extra garage bay for the L-Bs, but I guess you can always build a shed in the backyard for them (bigger than the one at your old house, of course). :fing32:
