Installing a ceiling hoist?

I bought this hoist at Harbor Freight, yea I know cheap but I will only be using it a few times a year. I just want to use it to lift my snow blower 180lbs and my 54in mowing deck and maybe a few heavy awkward things from my pickup truck. Any ideas on how I can install it, I have a Morton Building with a finished type metal ceiling that is 14ft high.

Thanks......:thanku:

Just took the hoist out of the box and discovered the hoist control has only 5ft long and my ceiling is 14 ft high so back to the store it goes, guess I'll try to find one with a longer control wires.

You could cut the wire and extend it. You could also install quick connects to make a removable extension section.

The lastplace I worked had those but had a 1000lb capacity and they slid on a track. Looked identical and were from harbor freight. I wouldn't trust them, refused to use them. cables were frayed from abuse. They were really jerky with the controls, dropped to fast I thought. One guy was setting a steel disc down and it went faster then expected, let go of the controls and it jerked, helping the disc slip from the clamp. The disc almost landed on the guy, after that they were shoved to the side and ignored.

To use a cheap hoist like those in an industrial environment is crazy but like I said mine will only be used a few times a year for some very light lifting so for me it will be just fine.

I have the one rated for 440 lbs. I got a piece of what I know as Unistrut and laid it across several rafters, bolted in place. The brackets for the hoist fit over it with a small added spacer.

Unistrut is basically heavy steel u-channel for hanging pipe and electrical devices. Lowes, Home Depot and most larger hardware stores carry it.

It works fine for lifting anything I've tried so far.

Rafters are only a little over 8', so I can't get anything high enough that I'd want to get under it. I just raise things to lay on supports or stands. I can raise either end of the LT, but not the whole thing since it's nearly 600 lbs.

I considered the 880 lb rated model, but wasn't sure I wanted to put that much load on the rafters.

Extending the control cable would be simple I would think.

Good point about the warrantee.

I just might be inclined to mount the hoist and controls low and the snatch block high where you originally wanted to mount the hoist and you would never be under the load while operating the controls. I'd also be inclined to replace the cable with some of the length required and more important with good quality cable I trusted.

I put one of these up in my dads shed except it is the 1000lb model. I extended the cable on it by buying a new piece of cord that was 20' long I believe. Cord for making the new cable wasnt overly easy to come by if I remember right as it was a 6 strand cord or something like that if I remember right. I used all thread to extend the bolt length and clamped his directly to a truss in his pole barn that has 10' sidewalls. It has worked great for 5-6 years now, we use it primarily for hanging deer on to skin and butcher but it is really useful for taking decks out from under mowers as well. Usually unhook the deck and then hook the hoist on the front bumper and lift the mower up and slide the deck out from under it.

The only picture I have with the hoist that I can think of. Me and the buck I killed last year.

It's a 4 wire cord. Do you remember where you bought it?

Nice deere....

You can get 4 wire cord anywhere.

14/3 w ground is 4 wires, wh, bl, rd, gn. Any big box or hardware store should have it - stranded is sold by the foot as extension cord stock.

You could go 12/3 if you wanted it heavier.
This should work for what I need.

Thanks for the help.

I went to Menards, Big R and my local Ace Hardware and none carried the 4 wire cord for what I need. The Ace Hardware people knew what they were talking about and called it SJO cord, I need what is called SJO 18/4. This is what I found online and they will cut and ship me the exact length I need.

I know your original post was about an electric unit, but have you thought about going to a manual chain version?

http://www.harborfreight.com/2-ton-chain-hoist-631.html

I have 2 or 3 of these on hand for various chores around the property. One of them is set up in my wood shop with a 16 foot vaulted ceiling. I've got no problems with "short" chains. HF also has a 1 ton vers for about 20 bucks less than the 2t. However, the 2t seems to go on sale quite often, making it cheaper than it's little brother if ya time the sales right.

Finally got everything installed and working. Keep in mind this hoist will only lift 220lbs, I used 3 2.5 inch long lag bolts into my rafter joists to secure it to the ceiling, same thing they used to hang my 12x12 foot garage door. I've already used it a few times and am really happy with it, should work fine for my needs.

I have had this setup for years in my House garage and now in my shed/garage out back. I swap the 1/4 ton hoist from building to building as needed but stays out back most of the time. I use it for everything, oil changes, lifting anything and everything into loft etc.
I'm using a door track from TSC (Stanley) with trolley. Works fantastic.

Very happy with the setup. I have 8' of straight travel, that's it.

The other day so I could easily get to my blades to remove them for sharpening I used the hoist to lift up the front of my JD X540 that weighs 740lbs, I think it was around 300lbs lifting just the front part a few feet off the ground. I set my floor jack under it in case it wouldn't hold it but no problems with the hoist.
