Getting too much fuel, or only running on one cylinder. After warming up the engine, is one exhaust pipe still cool enough to touch?

 

No. Same. Getting spark at both plugs.

 

Pull and clean the carb.

 

Clean as a whistle. All passages clean. Needle, seat, and float good.

 

I would check fuel pump. Also check your oil level if it is very high fuel pump is dumping fuel into crank case. I had one fail on a 22hp briggs.

 

Mine has the compression style fuel pump. How do you check it for too much fuel flow as it is running rich?:dunno:

 

I'd check the compression on the cylinders to eliminate them.

 

What are the compression specs on this engine? Not listed in my manual? :thanku:

 

I would take to a dealer to do this for I am not capable...LOL! I wish I was able to do all this! I need mechanical skills or as Napoleon Dynamite says, SKILLS!

Hi,
I think that you should adjust the valves again. My manual calls for .004 to .005 at 1/4in. past TDC. That should help with some of the problems.

I would put a fuel pump on it they are cheep.

 

I looked at your first post again and re-read the others. I'm thinking that you should check the flywheel key and see if it is sheared. It definitely sounds like the engine could have been running with slightly retarded timing that has progressively gotten worse.

 

I checked flywheel key and slot. It is still in place and seems to be fine.

 

Yes you are correct in assuming I would rather repair my own tractor, mower, truck, boat, electrical, plumbing, drywall, roof...It's cost effective imho and it is a learning experience. If you don't try, you'll never gain the experience.

 

Ok so you're running on one cylinder. This means you are getting fuel, but only to one cylinder, so the carb/intake and anything before that is not an issue. You are getting spark because you verified this.

What I would recommend now is to pull the valve cover again, and make sure the valves are operating as they should. Right now I can only logically guess that one of your valves is not working.

 

Pulled the valve cover and behold, a tappet had backed out of arm and pushrod was just laying in there. Also found a valve seal had come out partially. I guess this is common on this engine. Ordered a new complete head and pushrods because I don't trust trying to fix the valve seal and be back in the same boat a week, month, or year from now. So we have a solution, just waiting on the parts. :thanku:

 

Did you ever get around to checking compression? Perhaps a mute point now. You know something is wrong with that cylinder. It's time to open it up and see what's going on. My pesos are on bent push rod.

 

Ozhoo, check my last reply to B440. Compression numbers were 60lb on #1 cylinder, 210lb on #2. That's when I pulled the valve cover looking for a burned valve and found the backed out tappet and valve seal. :thanku:
