Ever cut a log with critters in it?

My logger buddies were in the area so I stopped up to see them and took the trailer to get some log cut offs. When I got home I had to saw up the chunks into rounds so I could handle them, they are pretty fair sized even when cut up. After cutting a round off I saw these little guys inside unhurt but very frightened.

They had a rough day, as they were sitting in their tree, it got cut and they rode it to the ground, which was then pulled by the skidder to the landing where it was sawed up. This being defective was tossed to the side and thrown in my trailer for a ride of about 6 miles then had their little hidey hole sawn in half.

The trailer has been doing this kind of duty for over 20 years. The axel is OK but I did replace the springs, and put in heavier ones after breaking one. It broke when the trailer was completely empty going down the road.

I have did at least 4 bee trees that either blew down in a storm or I cut them down.

This is the best one came down on Saturday afternoon after a Friday evening storm. It was in the city of Flint Michigan one block from down town. They could not find a closer bee keeper that would come because of Flints reputation and it was also fathers day.
I admit it is the best fathers day I have ever had. the people had a block party while I was sucking the bees from the tree and on the ground. people were walking up tome with bowls to ask for honey comb and seemed so happy when I gave them even a tiny bit. They sure treated me super nice with all kinds of goodies to eat and drink mostly all home made.

That is definitely a rough awakening for them. Once live caught some pesky red squirrels and relocated them.........marked their tails with paint........the little buggers found their way back over several miles of woods and streams.

Did transport some little birds........bought an old chevy truck for a project...has been outside with sparrow nests inside the truck parts.......maybe a distance of 40 miles.......the little critters are resilient.

This is like a kids puzzle.........trying to count tails.......how many were there?

I believe there were three. They must have been yearlings and were about 2/3rds grown up. They didn't want to come out. I quit when I discovered them as I could not get them out with a driveway marker I use to measure. I took a shower as I was going golfing when I came out and took the pics. A good 25 min. went by.

We have Packrats in this area. Cutting down an oak one time years ago. Like most larger oaks in this area it was hollow in the main trunk. When it went over a packrat came out and ran up the first thing it saw. Me. Came face to face and I swatted it off with my right hand. It responded by sinking it nasty teeth into the middle finger which resulted in me trying to shake him loose and him attempting to get loose.

Ended up with a dead rat, got him with an axe, and a trip to the Dr with the dead rat to have it checked for rabies. Couple stitches in my finger and some shots. Rat checked out OK with no rabies.

Ruined a good glove.

Not in, but under. Copperhead. They give me the willies.

Not in a tree, but found some baby squirrels just like yours in a fender of my RV this past spring.

I cut one down, a squirrel hit the deck about .05 seconds before the tree. It lost. I don't have much sympathy for tree rats, anyway.

I leave some standingdead & deadfall, for critter habitat. But I must admit I've shook a few squirrels out while dropping a tree. I thought it was funny when the baby squirrels took off running & knocked a woodpecker out of it's nest in a nearby tree.

This pix shows 1 **** but there were two, and they were throwing the nested squirrels out of their hollow...I guess stuff evens out one way or another.

We found a couple full grown raccoons in a hollow tree several years back, neither survived the ordeal unfortunately. More recently we found a pair of large black rat snakes, both were well over 7' long. They survived and we caught and released them out a ways from where we were cutting. A year or so later we found what I believe to have been the same 2 snakes in my barn by where we store feed, we didn't have chickens at the time so we just left them alone when we'd see them.

Earlier this week I took down a huge old, and failing, Norway Maple... It was loaded with old un-healed scars from limbing back before I bought this place. I dropped it on Sunday, got back to cutting up any good wood Monday and then Tuesday went up to clean up the mess and remove the huge section with the most scaring and dead wood. I cut through part of this big chunk with the Stihl and when it dropped off this little mouse popped out, unhurt but obviously in shock and with his eyes full of wood dust.... Poor guy, I cut right through his livingroom... I picked him up and carried him to the edge of the woods near the brush pile I was making for the critters. He sat in my hand for a minute before taking off...

I have yet to find any critters in trees I've sawed down ,mammals anyways--but I have had a cherry tree that looked alive & healthy with green leaves, suddenly crash to the driveway in slow motion,(just missed my car!)a few years ago--and about 1.2 billion huge black carpenter ants came spilling out of where it snapped !...

I have found a few thousand of them in cherry logs I split in winter too,all frozen--they either get burned in my garage or outside,I do not like bringing any wood in the house that has any ants, even if I think I was able to get rid of them all,or toss it right into a hot fire--I have had those darn ants chewing in my walls a few years ago....

I have cut open a tree that was rotted in the center and a few hundred of those creepy millipedes came slithering out, along with a salamander,or newt, or skink lizard, and a bunch of "pillbugs"..the lizard thing stuck around and gobbled up a lot of the pillbugs..
I stomped on the millipedes before one crawled up my legs....

So... You turned carpenter ants into "Fire ants"... :tango_face_devil: Good job!
