X2... I help a widow with her 3 acres. She and her husband mowed together before his passing with two Yardman 42” mowers. I used one to do it all and it took 6 hrs. She started talking about getting a new mower, but was only looking at low end stuff, I think because that’s what she could afford. I found the GTH27V52LS used (a bit roughly). It was priced under her price range so I got it and found I could usually mow her entire lawn in 2 hrs or less. Fastest was 1.25 hrs. Thickness and height make a big difference. Most folks don’t have much good to say about Husqvarna, but that mower has been great with some repairs, mods, and care. It mows very well fast.
Then I got my X738. It’s a step up in ride, cuts a lot heavier grass, but the quality of cut isn’t as good as the Husqvarna, but good enough. I mow a soccer field, about 2 acres, with it in about 1.25 hrs, but 2 when it was tall and more when I vacuumed it. I estimate an average of 3 seconds for a 90 degree turn, which I feel is comparable to a zero turn. I attribute it to Deere’s hydraulic power steering and tight turning radius. I’ve considered a ZTR, but am not sure it will save that much time over the X738.
In both machines, I believe they can handle more grass because of horsepower. I wouldn’t have guessed it without seeing it myself. I have seen a 10 hp tractor mow well, but it was gear driven, not hydrostatic, and it didn’t have hydraulic power steering or deck lift. If you want to mow heavy grass fast, I would lean toward a diesel. My friend’s Kubota BX2380 is a beast and cuts very well and he has cut 3’ high grass with it and mowed well. My son only passed on it because of the ROPS hitting tree branches. He wasn’t sure his wife or teen would miss them all and it didn’t fit under the Kayaks in the garage.
Needless to say there are many factors in choosing a mowing machine. Hills, blower, blade, tiller - not a ZTR, but on flat ground often the best choice as long as you remember that like tractors, they are not all the same when considering speed, comfort, and durability.
