My Father-in-law has an old Maytag 3 wheeled push mower he is thinking about selling and I'd like to get an idea of what it might be worth. He's not sure what year it was made...about all he knows is that it has an aluminum deck, the front wheel is wood and on the top of the flywheel it reads "Made in the U.S.A. Exclusively for Maytag Co. Newton, Iowa Eisemann Magneto Co. Brooklyn, New York". Its a twin cylinder engine that rolls over fine and seams to have good compression. The spark plugs fire when its pulled over but it does not run....most likely needs the carb cleaned or rebuilt.

Does anyone on here know much about this unit or have any clue as to what it might be worth?

Thanks Tom

Ive seen a couple of these on Ebay but have no idea what they went for. They are very interesting, especially to me since I have some collector interest in Maytag washers. Im sure you would find some interest if you cleaned it up and put it on Ebay.

Did a Google search and came up with some information...

Searched for "Maytag lawnmower".
Apparently, it's a "Monitor".
I'm guessing he would have a market with the old engine crowd.:fing32:

Good find.

My Father-in-law seems to think its worth quite a bit. He claims that one sold on Ebay last year for around $5000 in perfect condition. Anyone paying that kind of money for a 60 year old mower needs to get ahold of me.....I'll sell him a 1984 MTD 3.5hp 21" for 1/2 that. :ROF

I saw one on EBay sell for $600 is that condition

that sure is a neat mower if nothing else. Ive been toying with putting a few mowers up on the ebay but UPS wont ship them. How do you guys do it?

Dont mean to hijak the thread.....

That is one nice mower. Id run it and scare your neighbors :) Id bet that beast would get alot of smiles from passers by

viper tom:: don't lay the plugs out and see if they have spark..Should be a check ball in the fuel pickup..If your not going to keep it don't monkey with it..let the next owner do all that..if it has the eisemann mag its a early one..A two cylinder maytag motor will go for $150-$200..at a auction..on a mower probably $100 more...Ask your same ? here.. http://www.smokstak.com/ Or here.. http://www.maytagclub.com/... Lots of guys know more than me...B,:biglaugh:

Maytag Monitor lawnmower. I have owned two of them--ok, maybe 1 and 1/2 as the second was just parts.

When I got my first, I did some research and found a collector who was really focused on them and had books, records, etc. We have an engine show this weekend and I will look Sunday night to see if I have anything left of that material.

When I researched my Maytag, it was number 31 of the ones he was recording. I am sure lots more have surfaced, but the mower is RARE and highly collectable to a Maytag collector.

As someone said, a twin Maytag will bring about $200 (why, I dont know) and the mower complete is worth at least $400-600. I sold my better mower for $350 several years ago.

I would suggest a gentle clean up and put it on ebay to have a better audience of buyers. Dont tinker with it too much if you are selling; but try a little 2cyl gas and see if it will try to crank. A trick with 2 cyl Maytags is to pull the plug wire off one plug and ground it. Starting it now on one cyl; then reconnect the other plug wire. Cant explain why but it works.

Google Maytag Monitor. One Maytag publisher is Marvin Frahm (think all spelling is correct) I will ask around with the Maytag collectors this afternoon.

I'm very happy to see that we have such helpful members here that actually know about something as obscure as a Maytag mower. The internet is a wonderful thing and this forum is a shining example of that. I never knew that Maytag made lawn mowers, so this was sure educational for me. Everybody gets :thThumbsU :thThumbsU for the pictures and the info!
