I need to thin out the herd a little. I have a couple that look average. Not rusty but not real shinny. Do you think it is worth the time and money to paint them before selling?

Pics would help Tim. No inky dinky silly re-sizing issues on this forum :fing32: I wouldn't paint a tractor unless I was going to do a thorough job and that would be a lot of work. Probably better to just sell them as is.

:ditto: I'm more suspicious of a fresh repaint because I don't know how its been done. Is it going to start peeling 10 minutes after I get it home? A good wash and clean up of gunk and crap in the driveline and engine bay is a better investment of your time IMO.

I fell for a shiny paint job one time....... Never again! Mechanicals always trump looks (in my book), plus generally if looks are terrible, so are the internals.....

Not sure I'd pay more for your simplicities or wheel horses painted... those are of course the targets for the herd thinning right!?

To me a new paint job would indicate your trying to make up for something not working. If you want to get more for the tractor - make sure it is clean and looks like it could use a paint job and nothing else.

like would u paint a mower with a busted engine on it.... just to help it sell....takes a lotta time & $$ to paint a mower ..I would rather repower one than repaint..

Everything he said :fing32:

My dad collects antique gas engines. The guys who are into that hobby prize an original engine that hasn't been 'restored' no matter how shabby it looks. Same thing applies to old tractors, cars, trucks, and so on. 'Patina' has a market value that fresh paint can never match. There's a `67 Chevy pickup in my area that is all original. Never been touched other than regular maintenance. It's from Arizona and some of the paint has been burned off and same with the chrome. But it still looks really cool. Better than some full tilt restorations I've seen. I don't know exactly why I prefer it 'as is' but I definitely do.

Wow that 400 looks nice too.

Mine was about 6 cans of spray paint. ($60)

Time:
I only took off the hood, seat and fenders , and 3 of the 4 wheels to paint. Painted other wheel on the tractor.
Painted frame black, just taped things I didn't want the paint to hit, engine, etc.

Maybe 12 hours actual time, but alot of time inbetween coats of paint.

That tractor is actually a mix of several 400's. I have three of them and the one I restored got all of the best parts. There's a lot of new parts on it too, like the oil cooler, muffler, carb, tires, etc. The hydro pump is A1 and the engine is a low hours K532 I got from Minnesota. I spent a little stupid on it but I always wanted a new one and this is the closest I'll likely ever get. However, as I told my dear wife, I only have half as much in it as it would have cost brand new so I got an almost new 400 for 50% off.

You guys will back me up on that right? :kens:

WFM is the same as ever. Lots of useful info. This is a really good site too. The trick will be to find enough time to enjoy what you guys have collectively created here. I'm also into golf carts, old Corvettes and antique Ford pickups so I'm always short on time, and and my wallet is usually bone dry too. For example, I went to start my `50 Ford pickup yesterday and the battery is dead. I just replaced it last spring. I also got my old `76 Stingray out of storage Saturday and the brakes feel spongy. Always something huh? On the plus side, I started up all of my little tractors yesterday after 5 months of slumber and they all fired up and ran good.

Jimbo.. you did a pretty good job. Do you think you'd get enough extra money for the 160 to make the work and expense worth it, or would it have been better to sell it as it was?

Without a doubt painting it helped big time. When I bought it I paid $500 for the Tractor and a Snow blower that went with it.

I never even mowed with it, I was still using my Craftsman DYT4000 42" cut. The 160 only had a 38" cut, I have a acre lot,Don't get me wrong the engine sounded great and it rode nice but I really wanted something bigger.

About 6 weeks later I sold it for $1200. I think there was no way of getting anything near that before painting it.

No hour meter on it, the thing looked brand new and hardly used when I sold it. The Buyer never even asked me if I had painted it. I just said it was used much and is in great shape.

Seems like the older a tractor is the more the issue of whether it's been painted or not matters. For example, if I was looking for a JD 110 RF and I ran across one that had been partially painted I would likely keep going. To me, the 110 RF's should get a full tilt resto or nothing at all. But if I was looking for a 160 like yours it would be a different story. It's still a worker and it's fine to improve the condition as long as it's done well. Same goes for my 2nd best 400. It's been much improved cosmetically but I didn't do a frame off. It earns it's keep so I didn't spend hours and hours fussing with areas that aren't visible and are going to get dirty again right away. That tractor was done in 2007 and has enough 'patina' now to look like an unrestored tractor that's been well maintained.

I go with army If i was buying a classic I'd just have to remove a 1/2 a$$ paint job, but if I just need a mower i.e.. 160 etc. I just want to mow and be done with it.
