I learned on old machines there is a lot of rust cleaning it can be a pain wire wheel ,sandblasting that may pot holes in tin. I have a better way to do it with a battery ,washing soda and water; I cut a 40 gal plastic drum in half wire tied 6 piec of rebar to it ran a copper wire to each rebar kept rebar about 1 inch from bottom of drum filled with water put 1 tablespoon of washing soda per gal. would be 20 heaping tablespoons mixed it up till no sign of soda is seen took 12 battery charger that isn't automatic hooked pos or red lead to rebar hang parts to be derusted on a wooden stick with mechanic wire hooked neg or black lead to parts hanging in water depending on how bad they are ran it for 5 hrs took out and used a preasure washer to clean them presto most of the rust if not all is gone seems to remove lead paint too, after dry a light sanding or wire brushing then paint parts lok like new . U tube has lots on removing rust through electrolysis

Very cool, thanks! Do you have any pictures? I've been curious to try electrolysis, but haven't given it a shot yet. I have some suitable power supplies, so at least that side is taken care of.

I have a bottle of EvapoRust, which seemed to work pretty well on a few little parts that I tried. But electrolysis sounds pretty interesting, and maybe a better solution for bulky parts, where something like several gallons of EvapoRust would be rather expensive.

best to watch vidio on u tube if you can search[ removing rust through electrolysis] then make a tank to fit your needs I have found that borax washing soda dosn't work well Arm and hammer laundry booster super washing soda works best i put my charger on 12V set on high also the more washing soda you use razes the amprage higher I have found that that 1 heaping tablespoon per gal. works the best i also tryed to use my dc welder set on low setting but was to much amprage going through didn't make any dif. on removeing rust also the electrolysis removes the rust from the little pits and looks almost like sandblasting which makes paint stick better

I forgot to tell you this is reuseable let it set over night then pump the rust out of bottom clean the rebar and good to go again don't use baking soda or stainless steal that makes the batch toxic when done you can dump in the yard like emptying a washing machine

You empty your washing machine in the yard?
When I was a kid, we used to empty the washing machine in the lawn. It was just soapy water mixed with a little sweat and dirt. We had a Maytag machine with a wringer on top and we would squeeze the soapy water out and then put the laundery in a separate tub with rinse water. Then run the clothes thru the wringer once more and hang outside to dry. This was all done in the middle of the kitchen on Saturdays and took most of the day. I was in college when my mom got a modern washer and dryer installed in the basement.
