Use is mulching underneath shrubs and hedges.

I know there was a 19in Lawn Boy which I had back in the 80's.

But I don't know what else might be out there that can still be purchased.

Smaller than 19 would also work too.

19" Lawnboys are still available on eBay or Craigslist but the prices are usually high as these are mostly going to Lawnboy collectors. Are you specifically looking for a 2 cycle? I have seen a very small trim mower, I think it was called a Sensation that was 14". Good luck in your search. Bill

I had on older cast Aluminum Toro that was 18" non self propelled rear bag mower. Had a Tecumseh.

I have several old push mowers int the 14 to 19 inch cut range. This a commercial Sensation cemetry mower that cuts 14 inches. Bought at a garage sale for $25 and started the second pull when I got it home. Did put new nicer wheels on it. The others are JD, Toro, Snapper, Moto-mower, Craftsman and ***. Roger

Thanks all!

First, thanks for the search term "trim" which I wasn't aware of.

I did see configurations like the Sensation in my searches. Since maneuvering within hedges, front wheels that stick out are an issue - might even consider fabbing casters @ 45* (half way between side and front)

Doesn't have to be 2-cycle, I mentioned the LB because it as the smallest I had ever seen although not really looking for small.

There are some backwoods lawnmower junkyards and repair shops around me - I'll check there and keep an eye on Craigslist. The 18in Toro has better front wheel placement than the Sensation but looks like it might not have a good deck design for mulching. (Maybe I need to rethink mulching under shrubs - might be healthier to blow as much away from them as possible to keep rot and fungus down.)

Hey... what brand is *** (!)

For your thought only here are 6 more pictures of push mowers that I have bought for $5 to $40 by stopping at garage sales. All of these are 18 to 20 inch mowers. 18 inch Toro electric. 18 inch JD comercial trimer. 19 inch JD Toro clone. 18 inch Toro Flymo. 19 inch Snapper. 20 inch Sears/Homelite mulcher. Roger

That 18" electric toro has the same chassis as the gaser I had.

You might want to look at battery electric models also. There are quit a few battery powered push mowers on the market such as Ryobi, Worx, Black & Decker, Green Works, and Stihl to name a few. Prices are all over the place, but if you only are going to do mulching around shrubs and etc, the battery electric may be the way to go.

If you are thinking used, why not one of the Lawn-Boy 18 inch mowers. Either the earlier Buttercup or similar models or the later 18's with the D400 engine. Not over powering engine, but more than what is needed for trimming and easy too push as they are very light mowers.

I agree with all that was you stated Bill, and as far as power goes, those D-400s are really powerful when driving short blades like an 18" or 19 incher. Heck they do a great job of driving the 21 inch blades as well. I have a 21 bricktop that cuts hybrid Bermuda with no problem. I don't try and mulch with it, but no problems side discharging the thick stuff with it.

Yes the only real reason to go with a 19 over the 18 models would be to add grass catcher if wanted. But for only trimming the 18 is a heck of a lot lighter then the 19 or even than the 14 inch Sensation mowers I would bet. I have a model 5000 that wife likes that she claims as her mower. Light and easy to push, especially if you are going to be pushing and pulling back to trim around and under shrubs. You don't see these 18 inch mowers with chunks of the deck broken out because they use a heavy aluminum deck and don't have the big horse power engines. If you hit something that you should not have they will kill the engine and not bend crank and you will only need to pull the rope again to restart it.
