No all purpose answer for you.

Depends on what you are pulling. If you borrow a trailer with a 2" tongue and rent a splitter with a 1 7/8 you are going to need both size balls.

 

Thanks rrmccabe. I guess I'll just have to buy one of each size, at least they aren't expensive. Besides, you can never have too much balls.

99% of the time something small and light like that will be 1-7/8".

 

Thanks, I'll pick up a 1-7/8" and a 2". That way I should have all the balls I'll need.

 

For around the yard, I just run the 1 7/8", and use it on everything, including the trailer that takes a 2 5/16" ball. If it's got some tongue weight, it's no biggie on a flat yard. Obviously, some common sense is involved...

 

There is actually a 2 5/16" but the odds of you needing that one are slim.

 

Make sure you get the balls with a short 3/4" shank.

I would get the converter ball. The shank stay on your tractor and one pin changes the ball to whatever size you need. Throw the others in the toolbox and you will be set with whatever you need.

Just get the 1 7/8 ball and it will work on all the toungs cause you wouldnt be going fast enough to do any thing.
