It Can Take 3 different One's
You Can Use One of the Following
54inch Two stage
47inch two stage
46inch single stage
Now Keep in Mind You can also Use the 47inch and 46inch That was Used On the Older 425 thru 455 series

47inch Model That will fit as Follows
M01470X
M01471X
M0147SBX

46inch
M01480X
M01481X
M046STX

54inch
02C1M
The 54inch from the X700 series will fit and work On You X585 as well:thThumbsU

The Only Problem with the 54inch The secondary Impeller Is Poly and Not Metal Like the 47inch That why I don't Know if I would Go with the 54inch If I wanted a 2 stage:thThumbsU

I'm ok with the poly impellor as long as you're not clearing lots of gravel.

Newer snowblowers are proving all the time that composite and poly parts are actually more durable or outperform their metal counterparts.

Not that any of the attachments available for that series of tractor has durability issues. Built like tanks. :thThumbsU

The 54" is not only wider, but it also uses heavier gauge metal (at least in the end plates, anyway.) So it is a beefier blower overall, not just wider.

The 47" can be beefed up with the addition of optional end-plates that bolt on to the sides. Somewhere on this website there are some good threads where folks have taken photos of the 54" and 47" endplates, and the optional ones for the 47".

I also recall reading that the 47" had switched over to a plastic impeller like the 54". I think it was in a post by a guy that was a little bit disappointed (thought he'd be getting a metal impeller). Maybe it was you, Diesel Powered?

Beefier end plates would be nice. I've got that on the list of things to do before winter.

Now that you say something, I seem to remember a thread like that. Wasn't me, though.

Oh boy.. :00000031:
All in good fun. :drunkie:

Hey guys...thanks for all of the info. I really appreciate it. :thanku:

I do have one question though, What are the advantages of a 2 stage blower over single stage? My walk behind is two stage and pretty capable. I assume that single stage has less capacity.

The biggest advantage is the 2 stage can eat more snow and do it more efficiently. Personally, I don't think it's right to hang a single stage on a tractor this big (unless you already had it for some reason or got a smokin' good deal on one). :fing32:

From what I've read, there are pros/cons to both.

The auger of the single stage scoops and throws the snow all at once. So it has to spin a lot faster. Owners report that this helps in certain snow conditions (I think it's with heavy wet snow/slush).

The auger on a 2-stage spins more slowly, because the second stage high-speed fan blows the snow out of the chute. This seems to work better for lighter/dryer snow. But that doesn't mean it won't handle wet/heavy stuff -- maybe not quite as well as a single stage. And it will throw dry snow a lot farther.

Personally, I like the idea of the 2-stage. Mechanically, the single-stage is simpler so might be easier to maintain in the long run.

There is a good side-by-side review of the 47" 2-stage and the 46" single stage here on MTF, by I think it was JDFanatic (??), who has a 2210 and has owned both. His first-hand experience would be valuable.

EDIT: Here is the thread I was thinking of (note that these are essentially the same blowers that you'd use on the X585): 47" 2-Stage vs. 46" Single-Stage

a single stage blower takes a more experienced operator to use it properly.

you have to use a single stager at a higher ground speed.

the BENEFITS of the SS are: they are WAY lighter and take up a LOT less room out front, (and when storing) so for tight spaces it cannot be beat!

I would not hang a 54" off an X500 an x7xx ok, but it is just too big for the x500, (IMO!) and I would not use one without a popwer lift... a 54" will move more snow per pass, but take longer (on an x5xx), the 46-47 (ss or ts) will be able to go faster you will clear more snow in less time (assuming an X500)

a single stage is simpler and much easier to maintain.

if a newbie or if the wife will be using it, you will be more than pleased with a two-stager just be aware it is WAY larger and a 54" is way heavier...

Sort of amazed this hasn't been touched on, but the 2 stage blower is about twice the price of a single stage blower. Since you're in Maryland and only get the occassional monster dump (more than you want to I bet) the single stage would be a good choice. You can check my video's (the link is below) to see my model 49 in action. I haven't had any 4 ft. deep snow to deal with but I get drifts over 2 ft deep all the time and they get chewed up pretty easily!

Thanks everyone and you too PA318Guy. My snowfall sounds about like yours as I am in northern Maryland and just a couple minutes from Pa.

So I am thinking used single stage unit. I don't really need a pricey 2 stage.

Two winters ago I had drifts just under five feet in portions of my driveway. Nothing could quickly open me up. My neighbor opened it up with a CUT that has a front end loader.

Apart from that one time it is usually a 2 foot drift, so the single stage should be ok.

Thanks for the videos and all of the input from the forum. I got a real education. :trink40:

We used to use a CUT with a 59" Two-Stage to open up the corners of the parking lot after the plow crews were done butchering the place.

Un - Stoppable!:greendr:

IIRC the 47" two-stager did pretty well with that job too. Just wasn't a 1 pass operation like the CUT was. :thThumbsU

Since the model number was mentioned here in this thread, I'll post this question. Will a 46" thrower M046STX fit on a 455? If it was on an X700 previously, will a different implement drive shaft and upstop be required?

I had a really wide driveway at my last house and my single stage blower on the 400 was only throwing snow 10 to 20 feet. Thus having to blow the same snow multiple times. It really starts getting deep fast this way. I replaced it with a 47 two stage on the x485 and that seemed to throw 30-40 feet. I also had problems with the single stage clogging in wet snow. The two stage has never plugged up on me yet. It really depends on your needs as to which blower is the best fit.
