Well sunday night was a excercise in murphy's law I think. While we didn't get the snow and the ice, we got the cold and the wind in southern pa and the wide spread power outtages. As the temps in the house started to slip, I got the ok from the wife to get that generator I had been talking about and while I was happy about that, it was bitter sweet to have such a huge expense a week before christmass.
So there I was, out in the garage, behind me, a cold dark house with unflushable toilets a frantic wife and two screaming newborns. (Amazing how they are only 5 months old but can totally pickup on stress) 46mph wind gusts rocking the house and shaking the garage door violently, a little led headlamp to guide me through setting up a newly unboxed generator, gasoline soaked gloves and fogged up glasses clouding my way and a german shepherd trying to seek refuge from his weather fears inside my coat.
Fast forward 4 hours:
Generator humming away, a rigged but working furnace and a warm house. The wife and the kids are asleep. The dog is sitting calmly next to me. I'm alone in the basement with the big halogen floodlamps. The directions for the cut over panel are sitting on some empty christmas boxes along with my wire cutters and various wire nuts. The panel is on the wall with a thick armored cable running to my main panel. I think to myself "Best to let the furnace go as is, tomorrow if the power isn't back on, I'll test it all out with the water heater and well pump so we can have showers"
I pet the dog, turn off the work lamps and say "thanks for helping me be a good Dad" :i_praying
