Does anyone have a picture of the tube frame G14 battery in place with the hold down clamps in place? I'm trying to figure out why mine won't hold the battery. I'm thinking I have the wrong size battery, not long enough from end to end....:thanku:

:ditto: I do the same thing, but I use a block of wood to space it from the pulley.

Ed,
When I got my H16,someone had put 1" wooden spacers on either end of the battery. They were between the battery and the hold down wedges.

The original hold downs are not too effective. They wedge the battery from the sides and if you tighten them enough to hold the battery, they bow out the sheet metal of that area (what is it called?)

You would do better with the other suggestions.

It does slide forward into the pulley if not tightened down enough. Mine has a semi-circular mark worn into it from the pulley. And it slides backwards into the wiring.

I just remembered I have some scrap aluminum L. Maybe I can bolt one L section beneath the battery tray to keep it from sliding forward, and use one across the top to keep it down.

I can take a picture of my 1050 and its battery when I get back home. What I ended up doing seeing I put in a garden tractor battery that was much smaller then the original, was used 2 pieces of 3/4 play wood on each brace. I screwed them in from the back side. then I took contact cement and glued used bicycle inner tube to the inside. This made the area where the battery sits around 1.5" smaller. Seems to hold the battery in tight.

Great, thank you for all the ideas. I do have the original steel hold down wedges. I think I will use them in combination with wood wedges and I will make a nice front guard to keep the battery from sliding forward into the pulleys. That was my next question as to how many of you had a battery with pulley marks on it :)

Actually, mine looks clean the way it was done. Someone put a rod in front of the battery with a sleeve of fuel line over it extending from side of tower to side of tower and held in place with nuts on the outside of the tower holes. I assumed it was stock....

Funny you say that, I was thinking exactly the same. Was going to use a threaded rod and use stainless cap nuts on the outside. I will take pics when I am done with it.

I left mine as is because it does work good and keeps the battery away from the pulley. I had to take it out to install the large battery though.

mmmm You had to ask, When I got my Bolens it sat for a long time before I decited to work on it. When down and got a battery that would fit in the space and contunued to try and turn it over.
At the time it had no crab and had a pressure spray pump to run it ( Colmen camp stove pressure fuel tank ). got thinks in order and proceded to get the engine running , no exhaust muffler. So in the excitment with the engine wanting to run WOT , with deafing exhaust , I didn't think about the battery hold down.
It was late at night and was very tired and took the battery out to get it recharged. when I put the charger on it I noticed the wet spot on the side , mmmm pulley marks and a small wear spot. When i brought it in to recharge it , it was against my leg and a brand new pair of jeans. long story short , it cost me for 2 new jeans and a battery , belts , busted knuckel, battery termnals and cables and of corse my pride , shoes and socks.

now a bungie cord holds it inplace. pleas post your pics on how you secured yours. TY

That's a great story too bad all that happened you really sealed the deal about having a good hold down mechanism. I'll post pics once I figure out my final design.

I decided to go with the original hardware. Since I the battery I bought was the wrong size I decided to use it anyway. I cut three pieces of 1/2" plywood to fit the sides of the battery then I tightened the wing nuts down on the hold-down wedges. I drove it around for some time on rough dirt out back pushing logs and it did not come out of place yet.... I do plan on putting on my Bolens lettering on the battery and paint the plywood so that it does not look so obvious :trink39:

I am using a piece of 1 1/2" PVC pipe split length-wise in half and long enough to use "J" hook battery hold downs. Just tap 2 holes to accommodate the rods and the pvc will never short out anything electrical.

Good idea!! Think I'll try that on my G14.
