Tight steering on the 317??

Hello all, I have a quick question for you guys that know these tractors better than I. My 317 has what I feel to be super tight steering, it takes a ton of effort to turn the steering wheel. Why? Is there something binding in the column maybe? Is my steering box shot? Is it something I can adjust? I hope someone can help me on this, thanks in advance.

I guess I'm SOL then because I don't happen to have the tech manual. I checked out the stickies section and didn't find one there either, maybe someone that has one will chime in.

Already checked that, they are greased up and free as a bird. It seems to be somewhere in the box or column, when I turn right, it gets REALLY tight and has a distinct metal to metal "squeal" to it.

If it a Ross steering box then the bearings would be bad, youtube has a ross steering box rebuild video.

It does have a ross steering box so you can get a rebuild kit for it,heres the jd number.
AM31924 KIT 1 (A) BEARING
# 19 is a stud that runs in the worm gear and it is usally worn so I just replace it also,14 bucks

Also with the Ross box when you adjust the stud you mist do the when the box is exactly in the middle of its turning. In other words unhook the drag link and turn the wheel lock to lock. Then turn it to the middle between locks. If you adjust the box not in the middle it will lock up. It should be snug in the middle and a bit loose at both ends. Roger

Thank you guys so much!! Should I get the parts from my local Deere dealer, or would it be better to get them online?

Also how bad is it to remove the box?

Were it in my shop, I would jack the front end up. Remove the battery and box. Now you can see and work on the sector. There is a hidden fitting on the front lower sector that lubes the Cross shaft. Then you will need to adjust the slack. 1 1/8 " nut with the screw driver slot in the center of it.. This must be done with the wheels straight ahead. as it has a high center. If you adjust it when turned to right or left it could Bust the sector case. That is why I Jack it up. I also lube the Plate that slides against the sector... When adjusted right that is a good working system. But it is not Like a Power steering unit.. Life is good. BUT better with friends.

Tony thank you for the info! Can I do the rebuild on the box with it still in the tractor or no? Also would you suggest lubrication and adjustment before tearing it apart?

Tony is right on,when I did mine,I replaced the nut's with a nylon inserted nut and it was much easier than getting the 2 set to the right torque.the moving piece #18, I cut a piece of teflon the shape of it and put it between the gearbox and # 18,because of the friction and that piece is always dry so with teflon it dosent matter if it's dry but grease inside is important. My 216 steers real good now.

you can get most of it in the tractor but you cant get to the top bearing's without removing the steering wheel

Well hopefully my upper bearings are ok. I'll get to digging in there and see what's all dry, ruined. Hopefully I can grease her up and adjust it and it'll steer ok.
