Hello -

My first post, hopefully in the right section. We've had a Scotts by JD tractor for 16 years, the machine runs great. However, while the engine is strong, the speed over the grass has been slowing down, especially when pulling a sweeper. I figured I would check the transmission fluid.

Getting to it was .... interesting.

I'm not sure where to add the fluid. The pictures below show the tractor to give a perspective, then a close-up of the top of the transmission. The only possibility I see is through the vent hole (circled in red). Is that correct, and if so how do I tell when the level is correct?

Thanks for any help!

Jim

it may be the k46 tufftorq tranny. to change the fluid you have to take tranny out and tip over and remove fill cover under fan. then refill 20w50 synthetic, lots of articles on inter web

The picture of the model and serial numbers you posted are for the tractor, the model, make and serial for the trany will be on the transmission. On a K46 it is usually on the left or right side axle housing facing the rear.
Is this your tractor? TractorData.com Scotts S1742 tractor transmission information
Is it manual shift or automatic - hydrostatic.

TommyD, where do you live? Since I am in central Texas and mow in 100 + degree heat, I filled my LA120 hydro [with 79 hours on it] with 20w-50 synthetic 6 years ago. My mower still pulls like a Mack truck going up the 2- 20 degree slopes I have in my yard [ with 211 hours on it now...] If you use your mower in much colder temps use 5w-50 as X300 suggests.
