Excuse me if this is the wrong brand forum for this... but I think it's the right one lol.
A week ago, I saw that one of my neighbors had put a lawn tractor out for the trash man. :Stop: So I ran over to ask about it with every intention of bringing it home with me! And I did!
It was a Deutz-Allis 612, which I understand is a rebranded Simplicity 4212. I had used this tractor as a kid when this home was owned by someone else. When they moved, the tractor stayed with the house. My neighbor said he was mowing with it when it just came to an immediate stop and now it wouldn't turn over. It appeared the engine seized up. I didn't question his diagnosis of the problem and put the tractor in my barn and searched Craigslist for a replacement engine.
I traded a basic Craftsman push mower this week for a wore out Cub Cadet RER this week with the intentions transplanting the engine from the Cub into the Deutz-Allis. This morning I took the Cub apart and eventually got the engine out of it. It seemed like it'd be an easy task, but the Cub fought me the whole way. It didn't want to part with it's engine! After an hour and a half of fighting with it, it gave up and finally decided to let me have that engine. I pulled the Deutz out of the barn, removed the mower deck, and turned it over sideways so I could see what might need done on the bottom side so I could get the "seized" engine out of the tractor. I examined the pulley system and started removing the belts when I noticed that the belt from the engine to the rear end had jumped out of place and got wedged between the frame and an idler pulley.....strange. I saw it had a lot of tension on it. No way!!! The engine isn't seized!! It can't turn because of this wedged belt! I cut the belt off, flipped the tractor back onto it's 4 wheels, connected a battery, added some gas, checked the oil (very clean by the way!), and it started right up! Sweet! :trink39:
I need a drive belt, but I have a Simplicity dealer close by.
Here's a picture of the tractor and my lil buddy! My son is almost 2 years old and serious tractor nut! I've never heard someone talk about tractors as much as this kid - and he's got a pretty limited vocabulary at 1 year old!
It's in pretty decent shape other than the front right side of the hood has been cracked (the plastic), but other than that, the sheet metal is straight and it's not rusty - always stored inside. Tires hold air good!
So now I've got that Cub RER in shambles... I've decided to use the engine, drivetrain, and frame and put a plastic Gator Power Wheels body on it, essentially transforming the kids' 12v Gator into a little more rugged gas version.... but that's another story for another forum!
