Excuse me if this is the wrong brand forum for this... but I think it's the right one lol.

A week ago, I saw that one of my neighbors had put a lawn tractor out for the trash man. :Stop: So I ran over to ask about it with every intention of bringing it home with me! And I did!

It was a Deutz-Allis 612, which I understand is a rebranded Simplicity 4212. I had used this tractor as a kid when this home was owned by someone else. When they moved, the tractor stayed with the house. My neighbor said he was mowing with it when it just came to an immediate stop and now it wouldn't turn over. It appeared the engine seized up. I didn't question his diagnosis of the problem and put the tractor in my barn and searched Craigslist for a replacement engine.

I traded a basic Craftsman push mower this week for a wore out Cub Cadet RER this week with the intentions transplanting the engine from the Cub into the Deutz-Allis. This morning I took the Cub apart and eventually got the engine out of it. It seemed like it'd be an easy task, but the Cub fought me the whole way. It didn't want to part with it's engine! After an hour and a half of fighting with it, it gave up and finally decided to let me have that engine. I pulled the Deutz out of the barn, removed the mower deck, and turned it over sideways so I could see what might need done on the bottom side so I could get the "seized" engine out of the tractor. I examined the pulley system and started removing the belts when I noticed that the belt from the engine to the rear end had jumped out of place and got wedged between the frame and an idler pulley.....strange. I saw it had a lot of tension on it. No way!!! The engine isn't seized!! It can't turn because of this wedged belt! I cut the belt off, flipped the tractor back onto it's 4 wheels, connected a battery, added some gas, checked the oil (very clean by the way!), and it started right up! Sweet! :trink39:

I need a drive belt, but I have a Simplicity dealer close by.

Here's a picture of the tractor and my lil buddy! My son is almost 2 years old and serious tractor nut! I've never heard someone talk about tractors as much as this kid - and he's got a pretty limited vocabulary at 1 year old!

It's in pretty decent shape other than the front right side of the hood has been cracked (the plastic), but other than that, the sheet metal is straight and it's not rusty - always stored inside. Tires hold air good!

So now I've got that Cub RER in shambles... I've decided to use the engine, drivetrain, and frame and put a plastic Gator Power Wheels body on it, essentially transforming the kids' 12v Gator into a little more rugged gas version.... but that's another story for another forum!

Sweeet.

Nice looking tractor

nice haul... bout like the one I made last year on Craigs.....fellow in eastern iowa had 2 mowers....onew a Poulan...2005 model ...he said was junk....won't start... the other a Dynamark...12/39...said motor won't stay runnin....bought both for 200....got them home....a 5 hr drive..put Poulan up to shop....looked at it....checked oil etc.....battery had corodded terminals...so got battery charger....hooked it up & set to 75 amp boost....turned the key & it fired up....ran nice... sold that for 600 & got a Snapper Hi Vac ...8 yr old machine for delivery....pull start only....added all stuff to make it elect start & battery....sold the Snapper for 350 & 50 del......& the Dynamark....had an engine that sounded like a real busy BEE hive.....so junked that engine.....put on one just like it....sold it for 450....had a bagger too..

I could make a two page list of the mowers and tractors I trash picked that needed nothing more than a spark plug, belt or other minor repair. Most people consider a mower a throwaway item, they make no attempt to fix it, they just toss it and buy a new one. If we're lucky, we're there to save it before a scrap guy gets it. If your real lucky, you know a few scrap guys that know where to bring such finds.

Picked up a 1/2" x 79" belt to go between the engine and rear end from Advance Auto Parts for $13. Put the belt on, and drove it around the yard! Can't beat that! :trink39:

Nice tractor...Guess you better take it back to the neighbor now and explain what happened.........No?....I wouldn't either.........:fing32:
lol, I haven't even had it out while my neighbor has been outside. Someday he'll see me driving it around though and I'm sure the question will come up... "So what was wrong with it?!" :thThumbsU

Make sure you tell him it needed alot so he won't feel bad putting out anything else that may be valuable

I have the slightly larger version of that machine... it has been very very reliable. The only thing that kills them is the eaton 850 hydro.... no parts and hard to find... I have a brand new one as a spare and a good one in my tractor... I would clean the hydro air cooler and change oil and filter to help your machine have a long life... congrats

Thanks for the tip! I was wondering about that hydro and what kinds of issues people have with them if any, and if they are well built. That is good to know. I will certainly change the filter and fluid! I have my doubts that it was ever changed by the previous owner.

Really. I tend to doubt it would have an eaton in it. And I was looking at an allis 611, similar lawntractor, in another recent thread, and nobody commented on what hydro was in it. Do you know what trans is in it? Cos they could very well be the same. There's a messy wreck for sale near me, for too much money - but that's why I made the thread - wanted to know what it had in it. I followed this thread when you posted; but only just now realized it's basically the same mower. I just doubt there's an eaton hiding in there; don't know much about them; but they are supposed to be good trans. I think they appear in some Bolens machines. Any comments?
