Pull a sweeper behind a dethatcher?

Ok, remember, there are no stupid questions, right?

Rather than spend the $60 on a tine dethatcher that mounts directly onto the 42" lawn sweeper, what if you fabricated a hitch on the back of a tow behind 40" dethatcher and attached the sweeper to that hitch in tandem? Would it work?

I don't see it working well as the weight in the sweeper's hopper would probably lift the light weight dethatcher. I've seen it done with estate rakes but those have considerably more weight to them. Of course you could add ballast
to weigh down the tongue of the sweeper. You also need to factor how they will track on turns whenever going around obstacles.

I thought about that but the dethatcher will have a cinder block or two on it and the sweeper tongue weight should be pretty minimal. Any additional weight from the sweeper should help, not hurt.
Really? Maybe your sweeper is different. On mine, all the weight is behind the wheels so it is cantilevered and as a result, it doesn't add weight but rather lifts the drawbar.

Even when empty, my drawbar is lifted by the weight of the empty hopper. Adding more to the hopper makes the tongue lift more.

I never even got to the part where inertia comes into play. Go over any sort of a bump and the weight in the hopper might catapult those cinder blocks into the air.

Make sure you record your first run and post the Youtube link here.

Maybe we are talking about two different things here. Let me explain: the pull behind tine dethatcher has a spot to place weight (namely cinder blocks) to achieve a good dethatching. See pic.

My thought is adding a hitch to the back of the dethatcher to pull my 42” sweeper.

My wife picked up a 40” Craftsman tine dethatcher at a church rummage sale today for $15. That beats the $60+ for a dethatcher attachment for the sweeper. I’m just mulling the idea of running them in tandem to save time.

If it appears it might harm my X300, I obviously won’t do it. The yard is flat however so no hills to tow the contraption.

I can't see this hurting your tractor. If you have the parts, go for it and report back with the results!
