Parking Brake Lock/Unlock Broken

On my X485, the foot activated parking brake works fine if I operate it by foot.

On the dashboard, the orange "flip" parking brake lock/unlocker does not work. I can slide the orange plastic lever up and down and there is no resistance and it does nothing to "lock" the parking brake on or off.

If I push the parking brake down with my foot and go to "lock" the brake on, with the orange lever, nothing happens, other then the parking brake pedal travels back to the normal "dis-engaged" position.

Any idea what the orange plastic tab connects to somewhere behind the dash and how to approach/fix?

Yup. :fing32: Check Part # 30 too to see if it is connected on both ends and part #29 fits into part #37 when it's engaged or not engaged.

I'll take a good look tomorrow in the garage. I'm hoping if I put the tractor up on ramps I can crawl underneath and see alot of this linkage from below and that it's not all covered behind the plastic dash/mesh of the dash.

Starting the tractor is no problem, I just push the brake pedal forward and turn the key. It's just a matter of there is no parking brake "lock"... Thanks!

Which means you can't get off the tractor and just let it run..........

Having this exact problem on my X485. Trust me, the engine dies the minute you get off that seat. If your deck is off (as mine currently is) should be easy to trace the path - no ramps needed otherwise, Sure seems like it will be in the way. I'll be checking my linkage tomorrow...

I didn't get time to look underneath today but I did play with the orange lever. I can hear something under the hood also banging up and down, so my feeling is that (refering to the diagram), 6 is connected to 5/4B and 1B is slapping up and down. I suspect the connection down at 35/36 into part 37 busted loose. More details to come, hopefully with pics. :)

Usually takes alot to have one of those spring locking pins break, you should be able to see that once you are under the tractor.

36 24M7139 Washer
37 M145662 Latch 1

With your input, my guess is 35 broke. I was previously doing a lot of brush clearing with my front blade and driving over alot of crappy brush. The chances of having some kind of brush, twig, branch, etc, get lodged under the tractor causing it to come apart is pretty high... Look forward to checking tomorrow. Thanks for the part #'s!

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but having the same problem on my x730. The diagram towards the top of the thread looks pretty much the same as my linkage.

I crawled under & nothing is broken or loose. The problem is that the brake pedal won’t travel forward enough for the pin in #29 to engage in the cutout in the pawl #37. I can see where it’s been this way for a while as the trailing edge of the pawl cutout is all nicked up from the pin “barely” engaging.

The thing that’s not shown in the diagram is the rod that connects to the top hole of the cam #37. The rod connects to the brake in the axle. The rod has a jam nut &spacer that makes me think it could be adjusted to give more pedal travel. Problem is, I can’t get a wrench in there without removing half of the axle AND cutting the frame?

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry, I just got done mowing and tried to look at my X738, but I couldn’t see enough without dropping the deck. I’m hoping someone else will respond. If I don’t see anyone else replying, I’ll plan to drop the deck next week and get a picture of mine.

I took a couple pictures today, but I’m not sure I got what you need. Hard to do by myself. It would be better to have someone pressing the brake, then moving the lock. A video would even be better. Sorry if this doesn’t help enough. I believe the park brake was set.

I have an X739 with a parking brake problem. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is in the orange lever on the dash (hopefully, the rod just slipped out), but I can't figure out how to take the dash apart to see underneath. Any suggestions? Two screws on either side I can take out, but there is still stuff holding the dash down.

This is from the manual for the X728 but should be close to the same:

When I got my X728 the PO hadn't really lubed anything and the cruise control and parking brake didn't operate. I shot some PTFE lubricant into the areas that needed to move and then worked them for a while and everything works properly now.

Thanks for responding and providing this diagram. Unfortunately, what you provided is something I already found and hasn't helped me. The rod from the switch to the brake works fine, it is the locking switch on the dashboard that connects to the top end of the rod that I need to get access to. I think it's the unlabeled blob right above the circled "F" on the diagram you provided (although mine is on the right side of the steering wheel, this looks like it's on the left). Any info on how to get access to this switch behind the dash? The diagram below is the closest relevant thing I can find. I need more info on how to remove part 3. The switch I need to access is item 8 in the second diagram, which is under part 3. It wobbles around loosely in its socket, and is either broken or has become disconnected from the rod.
