Can someone help me identify this engine and can I replace my B43G with it on my 318

I wouldn't count on it. Doesn't have the correct oil pan mount for a JD garden tractor. Also, I don't think the flywheel blower housing would fit snugly in the frame of the tractor. Not to mention it needs the proper air cleaner assembly, dipstick, and relocated coil.

I purchased a 318 with the B43G with a 200 hour rebuild. Apparently it wasn't done right because when I started running it hard it started smoking and blowing oil.
I'm in the same boat. "Fresh Rebuild" and it blows oil out the breather and won't hardly run past half throttle. In the middle of tearing it back apart now. It ran good when I got it then after running it some something must have gotten out of whack.

You got taken by a fly-by-nighter, don't get to upset, but learn from it. There are a lot out there these days, they are a looking to fix just enough then flip it type operators, looking to make a quick buck. So when you look at buying, always test it if you can, by using it it, first to see (at least a half hour) this will bring the engine or tranny to ops temp then listen and feel for anomalies.

Know what you want, do the work, research. Like Mr.Beef does

Anyone who says it just needed rings/pistons in either a horizontal or v configuration and has high hours is not being truthful. Always check the paper trail, if not there don't pay, walk away. He will find another sucker willing to part with their money. Or make a list of what is wrong/broken, know what it will cost to fix, subtract from their asking price.

No disrespect taken and I did ponder that question very heavily before I made the move. I drove the tractor around his yard and mowed little bit of grass but his yard was flat smooth and the grass was very short not much of a test. The tractor with a broken Rod still runs so I'm not completely out of a lawn mower yet

Spend the $1300+ to get it rebuilt correctly. It will last a lot longer than one of these light Honda or Briggs repowers will. People swear by them but in my opinion if you're gonna keep one of these old pieces of iron running, you have to keep it's original American-made powerhouse with it. I've never worked on an air cooled engine as stout as an Onan.

Hence a search for places (look for certification in small engine repairs), on engine machine shops, talk to any repair facility that actual repairs engines. Many will buy crate engine replacements, but others like restorers will use engine machine shops to do the analysis on weather to repair or replace (blocks, cranks, heads, valves, rods, etc). It takes some work, but you will learn a lot.

If that seems to be to much for you, then why did you buy a 20 plus year old LGT. You should gone and bought new (big box store for a 5-10 year throw away) or spent even more a JD dealer with a full line up of equipment for a proper machine with hopefully no problems.
