New Gravely L checklist?

Hi,

i've ordered a list of replacement/maintenance parts for the 2 new L's that i am getting - I made assumptions based on the forum discussion(s) here and my experience with Wheel horses and old motorcycles - want to make sure i'm not missing anything though:

1. change oil/flush system/replace filter (bear in mind these ostensibly turn over fine, just won't start)
2. empty/clean gas tank/replace lines as needed
3. Clean/rebuild Carb and fuel bowl
4. clean/replace air filter
5. replace plugs and wires
6. Clean/adjust points in the magneto (it's been a while since I've dealt with points!)
7. replace kill switch (just doing this because i want to limit failure points)

then i assume the usual - make sure we are getting fuel air and spark and go from there?

anything i am missing?

Thanks,

Jared

Add "clean out oil pick up screen" as per thread of same title. Very recommended.

You probably don't need to replace the spark plug unless it's worn away. Mine have old ones, but they are easily cleaned and reused IMHO.

Kill switch may only need to be cleaned up. More likely for the wire inside the handlebar to be worn and grounding the magneto. I'd probably replace the wire depending on its condition of course. Make sure the small standby kill switch on the side of the magneto is clean and functional, good backup for when the handlebar switch doesn't work.

I'm sure others will chime in with more ideas, you seem to have a good list there.

Good idea. specially while i have all the fluids drained out anyhow! I figure the plugs are cheap and then i know they should be a good quantity. i guess i didn't think about if they come gaped appropriately or not, but it isn't difficult to adjust that.

ya, i figure if i replace the switch, then i know it isn't likely to be that - though i didn't know about the kill switch on the magneto - i'll check that out as well.

both machines have the same symptoms "turns over, won't start - seems like it is getting fuel cause the plug is wet."

makes me believe that, likely, we are dealing with no spark and there really only seems to be 3 reasons for that - kill switch, circuit issue, or magneto.

of course, i didn't troubleshoot it myself, so who knows?

When working with many unknowns such as a tractor that won't start I remove the wire from the magneto. That eliminates the wire and kill switch. If it still won't spark then there's an internal mag problem. Of course eliminating the plug wire and spark plug as problems first.

Agreed!

Have you verified spark?

Do you have compression?

Also, have you cleaned and gapped the points? If you are getting fuel and still no light off then we need to figure out why the spark is not happening. At this point I'd clean and or replace the points and condenser as well verify/set the timing. While you're doing all this check/adjust the valves.

If you are getting spark and verified it's happening at the right Time perhaps the issue is low or no compression. Low or no compression could be as simple as a stuck valve.

With plug in turning strap pulley clockwise by hand if it passes tdc with difficulty it probably has enough compression to start. With plug grounded on head if you see spark when the magneto impulse arm kicks over turning the strap pulley clockwise by hand you probably have spark enough to get it to start. Pull the bottom of carb off you can spray clean that way don't drop the float pin it is easy to lose. Drain the line thru the carb with bottom off. You can clean the points with magneto left on the tractor. I'd try to first get it running with minimal parts and work to check compression by using it. If compression is found too low to be very useful you need a rebuild anyway my approach is not spending time or money on it until I knew more.

Exhaust is looking good - i don't have the starter belt, but i do have the electric start option on both machines through dumb luck.

no one all of the above - haven't had time yet. I do have a compression tester that i plan on getting out once i have time/room in the barn to get tearing into it. Spent a lot of time converting the wheel horse from "winter" mode to "summer" mode.

Yep thats for shure, I had to take a weeks vacation to get something done to mine and Ive been off for 4 days and have only managed to remove a hub and scrape the gunk from underneath my sump screen.....along with mowing and planting 3 dogwood trees and getting a van fixed. I should be able to do something the next few days though.
Here is a new exhause kit I got, just hope it works as good as it looks. I really like that flange or housing. Take care

Believe me Toddnails I know, believe me. Im so desperate I tried to trade a cpl guns and $200 for one just so my son could use it to mow with untill I get mine working and repo it for myself (the loaner to him) so I do know.
BTW where's the post? Its on my phone. I dont take things very hard, especially if they are true lol!

Look at this crap, looks like it has been touched-up with two diff colors of paint....thats why I gotta strip it all.
I'll get back to that, getting pics from my phone to this always takes me a cpl times.
Look at those bolts on the hub I removed for the sump screen...that took almost an hr. doing the washers to.

Heres my cleaned up air filter housing, I did it w/a Dremel tool. Woner why I cant get a lot done? The inside of the air intake elbow for carb looks the same.
The problem is it has turned into a hobby, but its not supposed to be because its supposed to go to my son and he is supposed to be using it by now. And time is an issue as well of course and am mad as heck because I didnt have time to do anything to it today because of other things that had to be done.
