Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum but can't seem to find the answers I need elsewhere so I'm turning to the experts. I have a 1970 MF50A with a backhoe attachment. I recently purchased it and the previous owner had never change the fluids since he owned it for about three years so who knows when it had it's last fluid change. It runs and operates perfectly.
I have the specs on the fluids for the Perkins diesel but what I missing is the type of fluid and capacity for the rear differential as well as any fluid need for the trans. The tractor has a clutch and a six speed tranny. Three low and three high. I'm going to sound pretty stupid but there is a fill port to the left of the shifter. Does this fill a separate area for the trans only and is there another fill for the rear diff or is it all connected and if so, what fluid and the capacity.
Thanks everyone!

Hi Stacy, I have a 1971 MF50A with the 2 peddle shuttle transmission with a torque converter. I changed all the fluids when I bought it for the same reason. The only different transmission mine would take would be the ATF in the torque converter. Of course the engine is diesel motor oil of the right weight for your climate, 15w40 will cover most everything.

The hydraulics are filled with appropriate weight hydraulic oil for the season or my favourite is TGH (Transmission/Gear/Hydraulic) oil as it has extra high pressure wear inhibitors. It is filled from the plug on the right side leg of the loader, and there is a dipstick chain to the plug inside. Don't overfill or it will spew. Dipstick for the gearbox is on the right side of the seat and has its own dipstick. I use TGH as well, I believe your gearbox is the same. Brakes are bathed in this oil so don't use any special friction reducing oil or additive. It is filled from the plug beside your shifters. Steering is filled at the pump and is fairly tolerant of different fluids (ATF or TGH or Hydrauic is supposedly acceptable) I prefer to use regular mineral based power steering fluid.

So now it has been a couple years I've owned this beast. Absolutely love it, done so much work. I bought a manual which I recommend. Switched the power steering fluid to ATF which is factory recommended and I do think it works better. Also recommend removing the powersteering pump casing/cover which might have a filter inside. This filter goes bad over time and reduces flow. Replacing it really helped the steering. Hose leaks were introducing air into the system as well. After repairing all this my steering is silky smooth.

ATF goes in the torque converter as well. gear oil will make your engagement cluncky and reduce top rpm. Again, replace the filter on the left side of the engine.

My loader/backhoe hydraulics call for 32w oil but seem to work better on 46 in the summer. Universal Tractor Fluid (UTF) or TDH (Transmission-Differential-Hydraulic) are also known as THF (Tractor-Hydraulic-Fluid), UTF (Universal-Tractor-Fluid), UTTO (Universal-Tractor-Transmission-Oil) and UTHF (Universal-Tractor-Hydraulic-Fluid), are the recommended gearbo oil and can be used as a 32 or 46 hydraulic replacement in the hydraulic system if you want to stock just one oil.

Filters! Time, dirt and moisture destroy filters. Replace at a minimum every second year even on barely used machines. Mine were turning to pulp.
