If it's a 1617, the assumption is that it is a "plastic" model and if so, it should have a 2 spd rear (hi/lo) with a selector lever to shift between the two ranges.

Is it in the "hi" range?

You can do what chuck said, if it has thr high low, witch it should if its plastic. Also you can put larger tires on it. Not sure how much room the fenders have, and I don't think you can raise the fenders like older steal bodies. You could always take the fenders off. were in ny are you? Im in the lower hudson vally

 

larger tires would be expensive because it has 31s on it now witch are also loaded. but i have done that with garden tractors it it allways works so thanks for the input. i am in cortland Ny. Thanks Nick:thanku:

 

you could take the transmission pulley off and put a smaller one on, it will speed it up but you'll have to buy a new belt too

well it dosent have a hi/low its only got the 4 speed + reverse single trans. and yes it is the "plastic" fenders and hood. thanks Nick

I spoke before I checked my sources.

I had a "plastic" 1214 for a short time before I passed it on to someone else and thought it had a 2 spd rear.

I've since checked 1985 and 1988 owners manuals and see no reference to 2 spd rears.

In the specs the top speed for a 1617 in high gear was 5.7 mph (31" rear tires).

I would check your literature again. The plastic tractors, both 4spd and hydro, had 2spd rears.

I dug a little deeper and found in literature that the "plastic" 12xx models had a Peerless 2 spd rear end and that the 16xx and the 24xx had the Dana (5.17 gear) with bull gear reduction (no 2 spd rear).

It also stated that the 12xx tractors has a top speed of 7.5 mph.

Would it be possible or even feasible to swop out the rear end gears with a Jim Dandy? Top speed of right at 10 mph on 16" wheels.

 

its a plastic one. i dont think the have jim dandys. i believe its just power king

 

I guess they have a different rear end then. I know NOTHING about the plastic ones. Only ones I've seen are in pictures. Even switching out the gears in the metal economy's may not work. Even if it would, I wouldn't think it would be practical (cost or time/effort) just to pick up 2 or 3 mph.

 

I don't know anything about them either. I geuss they could have the same rear, they have the same tranny I believe. I've never had a plastic one and I don't plan to own one.
