My john Deere 316 w/onan has one of these. What is its purpose, do you need it, and how would one go about testing it? :dunno:

The TDM s only function is to keep the engine running if mowing on rough ground and bouncing out the seat,it keeps the seat switch from killing the motor,do a search for the TDM and there was a post on removing it.

When it first arrived at the shop my fading memory says Dick lifted it off the trailer with his big Ford backhoe and we tried to crank it with some borrowed power since the battery it came with was dead. We immediately saw and heard that the starter gear was shot and the flywheel teeth were damaged. We stripped her down to the bare bones with the engine removed but the hydrostatic drive remaining. I ordered a new $70.00 starter and was lucky to find a JD 318 flywheel on e-bay for a scant $50. including shipping. The teeth looked practically new and it had 95 teeth just like the bad one. That data along with recently gained knowledge that the 316 and the 318 used the same Onan P218G and the same starter I concluded that it must be the same diameter flywheel so I bought it.

I ordered downloadable manuals for the Onan P218g and the JD-316.
While waiting for these two critical parts to arrive we did a lot of cleanup and painting.
After reading the schematic electrical diagrams I decided to follow my usual course of removing almost all of the safty features especially that pesky kill switch under the seat.
During this time I was also reading "MyTractorForum" to gain knowledge of the beast.

The actual wiring was difficult to follow visually so I removed almost all of the material that bunched the wires into cables. I decided to surgically remove the little black electrical box that had almost evry wire possible routed to it'sconnectors. http://www.mytractorforum.com/images/smilies/omg.gif The black box only provided two functions. Support the seat kill switch, which I did'nt want, and a function called "battery discharge lamp control" which only, in my opinion, requires a lamp connected to the the proper ignition switch wire that supplies power to the ignition system. This turned out to be a simple matter of determining how to assure power would reach required places with the box and its connectors removed and that took the proper "two" wires to be connected together. I also removed all fuses and a auto reset circuit breaker and replaced their function with one 20 amp common house circuit breaker which I bolted to the metal pannel in front of the battery compartment. Presto!! No fuses to replace and no waiting for an automated breaker to reconnect the power. Easy total manual control. I had to replace a defective front PTO switch, new lamps, and a new official John Deere replacement Ignition switch that worked different from the old flakey one. A minor confusion. Now, it is very easy to follow every wire from one component to another and to takes up less space. I got around to it yet but I plan to sell the expensive black box on e-bay after I test it on my buddys JD-316. http://www.mytractorforum.com/images/smilies/fing32.gif ]

Here you go follow his post and seems like he has it figured out.

I always thought the Time Delay Module was just that, it delivered a timed delay to the front PTO.

Just go out and turn your key on and flip the PTO switch without starting the engine. The TDM makes 2 click sounds if my memory is correct. One to energize the PTO part way and another click to give it full juice.
