JD x320 won't stay running for more than seconds.

I have had this John Deere x320 for at least ten years and it has always run flawlessly. Recently I can see it is not getting gas to the carburetor. Things I have tried are: I have checked and blown out the lines from the tank to the carburetor. I do hear the solenoid click in with the key turn. I can suck gas from the fuel line to the pump and it is free flowing. I have taken the pump off and replaced with a new one. I do feel suction from the vacuum from the source however I have a question about that hose that connects to the fuel pump. Is that a special hose? At first I could not blow air through that vacuum hose and with the pump disconnected from the carb there was no gas coming out. I removed that vacuum line again thinking it had an obstruction but it seems there are pieces of rubber inside that line by design. I removed those and now gas is coming out of the pump when reconnected but to much fuel maybe? I can hit the carb with starter fluid and it will start for seconds and now with the vacuum line modified I am sure it is getting gas. I have spray gum-out in the carb to no avail. Some say in other forums maybe the electronic control unit while others say remove the bowl from the carb. I have changed plugs and it must be getting a spark if it starts with the starter fluid. I am at my wits end here so maybe someone here can give me more options to try.

If you have free fuel flow out of the line from the fuel pump that leads to the carb as you state, then you have a fuel restriction of some kind in the carb. People will tell you that those carbs can be rebuilt and cleaned ----- it has never worked for me. I would suggest a new carb.

While you're at it, make sure that you change the fuel filter. And that "pulse" line attached to the fuel pump should not have "little bits" of rubber in it.
