How useful is diff lock for plowing?

I'm sure you guys are tired of me starting threads but I have a question how useful would diff lock be when pulling a plow on a 400 series tractor the reason I ask is I'm looking at a 400 that has a bad motor and was thinking about possibly making it into a plow day only tractor.
I would proabably either be pulling a 12" single bottom plow or a two 10" plows with it.

My other question is how hard would it be to swap a p218 or p220 in a 400 and before any one asks the engine block in the 400 is toast it had water in it that froze and cracked the block. All feed back is welcome!

For a 2wd tractor diff lock comes in handy especially if the ground is slick from muddy surface or dewy grass surface.Single 12" would be your best bet,a 2 bottom might have clearance issues with a cat 0 3pt hitch.

Do you think if I added a set of starter weights and filled the tires if it would make up for it? I shouldn't have any clearance issues with the cat 0 hitch as I will be the one building the plow.

At the one plow day I go to in NY the soil is sandy and have no problems other than the plow will bottom out and plow a deep furrow.I don't know what the soil is like at PA plow day and I hope to attend it next year.I need a better trailer to make the trip it would be about 5 hours for me.

I might try and make it too PA plow days this year I'll more than likely just take the 332 this year unless I can borrow one of my friends tractors for my grandfather to run while where there. It would be around an 8 hour drive for me but from what I've heard it's worth the trip. I'm hoping it would be a good time to really test the 332 after all the work I've don't to it besides I baby it way too much in needs a good work out every now and then.

My thoughts are not so much on the diff lock but the machine. The 400 isn't one to get into unless you are getting some attachments with it, this is a very implement specific fitting machine meaning nothing will fit a 400 unless it's for a 400. Many members here have them and made them look like ferocious beasts but only after a lot of work and machining (talkin to you Grandpa Jay). So be aware of what you are getting and look forward to hunting attachments. Good Luck Deere hunting.

I know that, I wouldn't be using it for anything but plowing and maybe pulling carts and other 3pt attachment's I won't be mowing with it and for anything else I have the 332 which will also be plowing at plow days. Plus hunting for the stuff for the 400 is the fun part of the hobby. Im going to try and get the 400 pretty cheap and then swap either a vanguard or a Kohler Command Pro with EFI and E85 in it I'm thinking of doing kind of a restomod on the 400 modern digital gauges and LED lights as well as a few other items.
Plus this would make an excellent video series for the Youtube channel!:thThumbsU

I have my diff locked about 95% of the time, don't want to spin a tire then stop tractor then lock diff & get going again.

I looked at it but fabricating something isn't an issue for me as I have a MIG welder and a lathe and drill press so I can build adapter's and mounts no problem. Plus I've heard some bad things about SEW. This is the engine Im looking at I think it should fit still have to do a little more research. https://power.kohler.com/na-en/engines/product/command-pro-efi-flex-fuel-fch749 Its only like $100 more than SEW and I gain 3.5hp and EFI and E85 Flex fuel.

*Edit did a little more research and I don't think it'll fit unless I can find a smaller air filter anyone have any ideas or know where I could get one for this engine?*

Never plowed with a garden tractor but have quite a bit on a fullsize farm tractor. The diff lock was used fairly regularly especially since one side was running down in the furrow and the other up on untouched ground. If was just a little slick the upside tire would tend to spin a lot and we usually locked in the diff at the beginning of each round and only unlocked it when turning at the end of the field.

That's exactly what I wanted to know! But I have a question couldn't I just use the turning brakes to take some power off the upside tire and apply it to the one in the furrow should I need too?

True but isn't that kind of why I have two brake pedals?.:sidelaugh But seriously though I understand your point and will defiantly take that into account. Thanks for giving you're input I appreciate it! Dang it why couldn't John Deere just put diff lock on the 400! :dunno::Disgus:
