Hi All,

Is there a difference between the GT6000 and Craftsman II 18hp? there is a late 90's gt6000 with stering problems, it needs a belt and comes with a plow, the seller is basically looking for the highest bid and I don't know what would be a fair offer. Also there is a mid 80's 18 HP Craftsman II Garden tractor that needs engine work and the seller is looking for $225.

Any advice would be appreciated.

it depends on what the configuration of the GT6000 is. there are some badged GT6000s that have a vertical shaft engine and others with horizontal shaft engines.

personally, i'd rather go for the mid 80s Craftsman II even if it needs engine work. i have three of these tractors and the older ones are better machines, they have more metal on the frame (thicker gauge) and generally feel sturdier.

A "Craftsman II 18hp" can mean anything from an 80's GT6000 or GT18 to a 90's LT4000.

From my observations:

A tractor with a horizontal shaft briggs opposed twin and pin striping on the fenders with light gray paint and the two-piece hood is a late 80's Craftsman II GT18.

A tractor with a vertical shaft briggs and stratton opposed twin engine, a two-piece hood and light gray paint is a 1990 or 1991 Craftsman GT6000.

A Tractor with a vertical shaft Kohler Magnum opposed twin engine and the one-piece hood with light or dark gray paint is a 93-96 GT6000

Those are most of the configurations that I remember off of the top of my head. The GT6000s never came with horizontal shaft engines, only the GT18's.

$200 would get you a GT is decent shape with one or two implements in running condition, but it may be in need of a carb clean or something like that to get it up to full speed. If the engine troubles are anything more than that, it is not a fair price IMO.

That statement is incorrect I have a GT6000 917 255 960 with a 18 horse kohler horizonal twin on it. it is the old gray beast she just keeps on cutting It is really to big for my current yard . I may sell it come june . I am going down to get a Grillo walking tractor and tiller next week but will have to wait to June to get a mower deck . if the grillo cuts to suit me I will probily sell the craftsman

That GT looks nice and clean,, The seat looks to be in good shape, I don't see any rust really that would concern me. I think I would jump on that one pretty fast,, Maybe get him down a little on the price, Unless the engine issue is minor.

Snag that one

He hasn't a clue then. probably looking on small engine warehouse for a repower kit and didn't find 1.. IIRC it's a horizontally opposed Briggs twin horizontal.. plenty of donor tractors out there or used engines to be had. find the engine, find the shaft diamater and length and make it work... With a seized engine, I'd offer $175/ max cause you have to assume it as a parts machine at that point. it's probably good but what if the transaxles toast too?

Well I think the GT6000 you were looking at is gone. Maybe you got it? It looks a lot like the one I have and I can't say enough good things about it. Very strong, starts easy, plows, handles ground engaging impliments, etc. Those do come up fairly often. Some owners think they are made of gold though and some just want them gone. Be patient and the right one will come along. It looks to me like prices are starting to drop. I wouldn't mind getting another one.

No worries Lobsterbox.
Esalman, both the simplicity and Ariens where quality machines as well.
