Hello,
I just purchased a JD GT225 to use for yardwork while my Wheel Horse is down.. I purchased this from a small engine repair shop in Port Royal, PA. The tractor is a little rough around the edges cosmetically, but seems to be solid mechanically. Ive done plenty of restoration work and have a small machine shop at home so a "fixer upper" doesn't really bother me. This thing has broken plastics, the rear tins are cracked at all the mounting holes, and there is a little rust here and there on the wheels and deck. All of it should clean up easy and I purchased it for what I thought was a pretty good price for this area. Most of the time you cant even find the later garden tractors for sale around here for more than a day or two.

So now that you have some history.. the problem is im not seeing a serial sticker on the frame where id expect it to be located. Are there any secondary locations where I can identify this tractor?

The problem is, I planned to throw a few hundred into welding up the rear tin, refinishing the wheels, and putting new plastics on to get her back in tip top shape. Almost every parts source requests serial identification..

any help/advice? Based on the source of this tractor, I really doubt the sticker was maliciously removed but obviously cant rule that out.

The serial number sticker was the size of a business card and was glued to the frame. It probably got blasted away from pressure washing. I had a gt225 that had a partial sticker. My 455 sticker is long gone.

I don't think there were a lot of variations in the gt225 line. I think they went from a 15 hp kohler to a 16. The hydro should have stayed the same as well as the cosmetic pieces like the front bumper. It looks like yours has a new upper hood.

Thanks guys. Checked deck and engine serial.. Deck has no tag (54"..not even sure if it's original) and serial is faded off the sticker on the motor so I guess researching those numbers isn't an option. Glad to hear it's not that uncommon to lose the sticker.

I'm pretty happy with how this thing drives/cuts! im considering picking up a tiller and snow thrower as well!

I'm pretty sure that's a 48" deck. Most came with a 42" deck.

The OP should learn how to use the JD parts site and be able to look up his own parts. If there actually is a serial number requirement to look up a specific part it's usually possible to figure out what the difference is and then you will have a good idea what range your machine is in.

As an example, on my machines there is a serial number requirement to order the traction drive pulley on the motor. It turns out that the earlier machines used a 1 1/8" crankshaft stub and the later machines use a 1" stub. By finding out what size crank stub on my machine I know what serial number range it's in.

In my experience on looking up JD parts only on a very few parts will you need to know the serial number. On the majority of parts they didn't ever change and will fit all years. Sadly, there's lots of non-service oriented parts men out there who have no interest in helping out their customer.

Looks to be a 48C deck.
Agreed; the trailer is a 4x8 (single sheet of plywood), and the deck looks to be the same width as the trailer. Sticks out about the same as my 48C on my GT235.

Look at the engine plate. If it's a CV15 (15hp) its a 99 to '01. If it's a CV460 (16 hp), it's an '02 or '03. The frame sticker probably fell off, got gas or oil on it and the adhesive let go. The one on my GT235 came off, too. I peeled it the rest of the way after it was hanging, and taped it inside my owner's manual.

Thanks everyone, certainly appreciate the input. It is indeed a 48" deck. No serial sticker but I measured and confirmed 48". Sorry for the typo. The engine model is CV15s so that'd put it at 99 or 01'. I think that's enough info to start digging in and sorting through this mower.
