I need help identifying the correct coil for this unit. My coil has two wires (yellow & blue). Any replacement coils I see have one wire.

Thanks
Dave

I had the metal contact thinghie inside the rubber spark plug boot become detached from the spark plug wire on one unit. After making sure I had enough wire,I lopped the end off and remade it. Back in business.
Does your genny have an ON/OFF switch that shorts out the coil? Could the switch have gone bad or a lead fallen off?

That's an inverter style generator......a chinese copy of the Honda EU2000i. The ignition coil doesn't sit next to the flywheel, as you see in the close up photo of the coil. Instead, there is a trigger unit mounted next to the stator ring, and that supplies the pulse that causes the coil to generate spark. Blue is probably the signal wire from the trigger, and yellow is the kill system wire, which is grounded by the oil level sensing system and/or the on-off switch.

Firstly, change your oil. Low oil level and extremely dirty oil will trigger the oil level sensor, thus killing spark. Once you have clean 10w-30 oil, filled to the edge of the threaded oil fill hole, retest for spark. If you have no spark, report back. And just an FYI, old dirty engine oil in these, and the actual Hondas, rots the timing belt, causing it to break. It is a complete tear down of the generator and the engine, in order to replace that belt.

Also, let us know what make and model that thing is.

I have the same problem and replacement coils for 1200 watt 2 stroke energizer only show coils with 2 primary connections, mine has an extra wire, do you know how to test these coils before I buy a replacement and find out the problem is in the ignitor board! I did a volt test and getting voltage to the coil when cranking, just not sure what the signal is suppose to be!a ground?

This Chinese clone has no markings, model numbers or other identifying marks. Even the carb is from Japan without model numbers. My advice is to not buy a clone. p.s. My personal gen is an EM5000 Honda, without electric start but if I can add the elect start some day I will.

After reading austinado's response, maybe the coil is ok? I changed the oil and it is topped up to the top thread in the fill hole still no spark. No issues with the s.plug wire, all is intact.

After some googling I think I found the right coil but need to verify the digital sizes. They even have the same carburator. I am still looking for your advice to avoid the cost of a new coil.

Thanks,

so you must have module gone or pickup coil!you can put a voltmeter on coil input wires and see if your getting anything to the coil from module.or put it on the pickup coil and see if your getting anything, I'm getting about 5 volts from pickup coil and 22 volts to coil input. I can't find a module for mine, there are retro fits ,but this genset isn't worth spending more than $30. It was given to me from a fellow that bought a Honda because this one was intermittent, apparently that issue is solved it quit completely!
I would still like someone to answer the question about signal from module I can't seem to find anything about the module operation other than putting a testlight on the signal wire and watch for it to flash, this unit doesn't have 12v. onboard, so I'd likely have to use a battery powered continuity tester!

Follow the blue and yellow wires down to that connector that's visible in your above photo. Then follow those wires further down to the area near the big rotating on/off switch.

Try to determine where the wire to the on/off switch is, and disconnect it. Then with the spark plug removed and grounded, see if you have spark. If you do, you know the on/off switch has a bad contact. If you don't, attempt to locate the oil level sender shut-off wire, and disconnect that. Repeat your test for spark. If you have spark, you either have really dirty oil, or a failed oil level sensor. Again, really dirty, or really thinned out oil (from age/time/or fuel contamination) will trigger the sensor and kill the spark. It's a lot easier during diagnostics to just dump out the small amount of oil these hold and pour in fresh, than it is to possibly chase your tail, telling yourself, "the oil level is full, so that's not the issue".....when in fact, it could be.

If you have no spark with fresh oil, no spark with the oil level sensor disco'd, and no spark with the on/off switch disco'd.........replace the trigger/ignitor component that's located down on the engine, sort of in next to the stator ring. You can probably install the actual Honda part, if you can't find the one your generator specs, since your engine is a complete duplicate of the Honda.
