Im looking to buy my first tractor for mowing and snow removal. Ive done some research and really like the bolens 1886 as far as price/quality/attachment availability goes. Ive found 3 im interested in on craigslist but im not sure what questions I should ask or what to look for when I go see them..

http://maine.craigslist.org/grd/4597265400.html

^ This is the one im the most interested in and have spoken with the guy. He says that he replaced the motor with a ht20 motor in 1988 and that it blows smoke. He commented that he has worked the tractor up until recently. He wont sell attachments separately which I was mostly interested in it for the 2 stage snowblower and FEL. If the motor is bad how hard is it to rebuild/replace as far as locating parts and price go?

^ This tractor I really like but want to make sure its complete and not sure what to look for. He said he has a single stage snowblower he would sell with it for 250.00

^ This one I couldn't find a whole lot of information for so any information on known issues/ parts and attachment availability would be awesome.

Thanks,
Mike

Get the diesel!!!! That is, in my opinion, a fair price for this tractor. If it comes with more attachments it becomes a really ggod deal.

The H152 was also sold as a MF1120. They have parts books and exploded drawings on their website at AGCO. This is the easiest way to get parts. You could also use those parts numbers to get better prices elsewhere. I've had good luck at Carquest with things like filters and belts, even got a thermostat right off the shelf.

Check the tranny before you buy. Take it for a drive in high range. Listen for whining or growling, also a loss of power after it warms up. This tranny is repairable, but not by the manufacturer. Kits are available and lots of help is here. Ther is also a separate rebuild manual for it that can be bought. If it is slipping in high this could be a negotiating point pricewise. The dip stick to check oil level is under the front of the seat.

In reality this is a garden tractor not just a lawn mower. I bought mine with a cab, 48" mower deck, tiller, FEL and snowblower. There is another guy on here who has a thread where he completely overhauled one of these, with lots of pictures. His handle is fxrs55. Youy'll probably hear from him too. Get the diesel!

Would any of the attachments from a 1886 work on the h152? I just worried ill have a hard time finding the attachments if there not.. im moving in 2 weeks and will need what ever tractor i buy up and going to mow right away and snowblow this winter... what are the reasons you would choose the h152 over the 1886? Is it more reliable? It does look like more of a work horse for sure.. sorry for all the questions but I know nothing about tractors and this is a big purchase for me, So i want to do it right the first time.

Not sure what will interchange but not likely. the H152 is a Japanese built Iseki tractor that was imported by Bolens, MF , White and a few others. There is no support directly through Iseki for these older machines but they are still alive as a companyand doing well. Give this site a day or two and I'm sure you will get many more replies along with more informatrion.

I like mine because it is built like a real tractor. It has a proper PTO (2 speeds), a proper 3 point hitch and is built quite ruggedly. It has the capacity for several different hydraulicly operated attachments. It has lots of power, I can literally mow a hayfield without the tractor breaking a sweat, basically no smoke. It takes me 4-5 hours to reduce a .75 acre hayfield to lawn with a 48" deck. That's non stop. I'm not sure how hard it would be to find attachments but try looking on-line to see what might be available, specifically the mower deck and a snowblower.

that iseki is by far the best valve in my opinion- it has the front pto- so you can run any tube frame or large frame snocaster off the front- the knock I have on those huge 2-stage blowers- they are extremely heavy- over 400 pounds- and poor for snow 1-4 " in depth- mine had a extra hydraulic control just below the seat-right side- for operating the front lift cylinder for the snocaster- much more versitle with the pti and cat. 1 3 point also-

I'd sure like to see proof of that, as the Bolens Attachment Interchange List sure doesn't support that statement. I don't know of ANY attachment (other than wheel weights) that will interchange between the Tube Frames and Large Frames, let alone the Iseki's

Of the ones listed, I'd say that the 1886 with the FEL and other attachments would be the best deal.

I would sell the 2-stage caster and use the $$ to get a single stage though. Those 2-stage casters are just too heavy and very hard on the tractor.

That is a good price on the Iseki/Bolens, but finding attachments can be a problem.

I say the 1886 with Fel is over priced with it haveing a sick engine.

Only deal in the 3 is the Iseki but good luck finding attachments.

The guy that owns the 1886 with FEL told me the motor is smoking and will need to be rebuilt/replaced.. otherwise I would purchase that tractor. Im just worried id have a hard time finding a motor or rebuild kit for it.

I was talking to another guy with 3 1250s for sale, 1 with a sickle bar, 1 with a FEL, and 1 with a 46" mowing deck. he wants 3k for all 3 and all need motor work. I was thinking of trying to buy the FEL if it would fit the 1886 and his Haban flail mower.

Your statement implied that it was just a matter of getting one and using it. Big difference between that and a lot of fabrication.

With enough 'fabrication', you can turn a he into a she.

However, the average person doesn't have the knowledge and/or equipment to do it.

remember the 1886 frame is about 4" longer than the 1250 frame- a Johnson model 14 is compatible- however- the pump to engine pulley alignment may be off- not- sure- the frame had to be longer to accomidate the twin kohler engine- sorry for the confusion- I guess I thought I was average - I would take a compression check on that 1886 before I bought it- just to make sure-

please do not take this the wrong way- but you need to think about what you may be getting into when buying a 40 plus year old piece of equipment- most people like here on the forum enjoy the aspect of restoring and maintaining and using this kind of thing- if you do not like that part of it- you probably should think about something more modern- just food for thought- as far as the flail mower- the pyo spline is same as the 1250- 15 spline on the tractor- .750" x .875" at the mower- and I believe the lift arms are longer for the 1886

Thanks for your concern but I am considering what im getting into. That is why I joined this forum in the first place, because I dont know much about tractors and have questions. I just figured I could ask questions here to help determine what " im getting myself into ". I dont mind a project and plan to restore whatever tractor i purchase, but I need to have this running for the remainder of the summer and winter.

sounds good then and welcome- you will find plenty of help on here if need be- good people- willing to share their knowledge- anywho- for the compression test- you could likely borrow one from car-quest or advance auto. pull a spark plug out- and screw in the tester- whirl the engine over and read the psi- same with the opposite side- reading should be around 125 or so- their should not be a big difference between the 2 cylinders- remove both plug wires before you do the the test

I ended up going with the 1886 that has the johnson loader, mowing deck, 2 stage snowblower, garden plow, disk harrow, weight box, 2 sets of tire chains, and 3 point hitch. It came with all the origal manuals for all the attachments and a bunch of misc parts. The motor is running fine so far and everything works as it should " knock on wood".. He ended up letting it go for $2,500 so I think I got a good deal. Thanks again for everyones input to help me decide what to get!

Looks like another victim of the Bolens bug. Another 6 months, you will have an HT for each of those attachments.

Post some pictures of the tractor! The Craigslist pictures did not really show off the tractor.
