Once empty of gas, I would not worry about a tiny bit remaining. I have heard of 18 wheelers actually adding a little gas to their diesel in the winter.

Agreed.

Any small amounts of gas, itself, will cause no harm to your tractor. Now if there's also debris (including water) in the can, then you might have a problem.

 

Other opinions may vary, but I don't think a few drops of gas would bother. Shake it out as best you can, let it air out if you want, and use it.

 

Just dump out any gas in the can and fill it up with diesel. It will be fine.

Can is airing out now, can't do any leaf and pine needles pick up cause it's raining again today.

What they said a few drops of gasoline won't hurt the diesel fuel.

 

I was reading through JD tech manual and read where the fuel can for diesel should be plastic rather than galvanized metal, something in the metal or galvanization leaches into diesel fuel.

I was going to buy an Eagle yellow 5 gallon fuel can to match my red gas can, who knew.

Imho, it's important to use the correct colored plastic can - Not just for yourself, but others as well. I know of a fellow who put kerosene in a red can, and while he was out of town, the daughter's boyfriend thought it would be a good idea to cut the grass for him. Didn't take long to destroy the engine. Lesson learned the hard way.

 

A metal can that is painted inside as well as out would be just fine.

Rinse the can with a bit of diesel and you are good to go, that will get any contaminants out. The big problem with metal cans is condensation, diesels hate water in the fuel.

 

Leave the cap off the can..... any residual gasoline will evaporate pretty quick.
