Ok, well I've had much luck with all my older Tec engines, but I have 2 newer ones that give me nothing but trouble. One's on my tiller and the other is on my dad's snow thrower.

I wanna ask you guys about the one on the snow thrower. It's an 8hp. My problem is that when you put a load on the motor, it throttles itself way back and almost dies. You have to play with the throttle lever to keep it from dying. It has to be run in first gear to blow 2inches of snow. Anything more than 4inches...forget it. Is this a govenor issue or could there be something else wrong?

I don't know exactly what the answer is, but I would asume the same, as or tecumseh's I think anything you get now is a chinese one, the chinese also baught out another small engines company aswell just can't remember the name.

They don't make Tecumseh anymore and as far as I know they were always american made. Probably because the chinese don't know how to say Tecumseh.

This one is from the mid 90s.

Sounds also like a carb issue to me. My Toro mower was going way down when I engaged the blades, RPMs dropped by almost half. Double checked my carb settings and the main metering jet was out too far. Screwed it all the way in and back out 1.5 turns, ran perfect. Holds speed perfectly well now. You could very well have some dirt/grime in the carb. Those Tecumseh carbs of that era weren't very good.

I here Techumseh is no good often.I have a 11hp OHV Techumseh Snowking on my Simplicity 11-32 Comercial snowblower.I think its the last year Simplicity used that engine before switching to Briggs when they bought them out a few years back.It about 4 years old.It knock on wood has been a excellent engine.Starts on the first pull and has more then plenty power.Actually runs better under heavy loads then ideling.

When I was a kid I had a minibike with a Techumseh 3.5 hp I think it was and it was abused terribly by my self and brothers and neighbor kids.Until one day the rod went thru the block. We were kids I never checked the oil:fing20: We also had a Massey Ferguson #7 lawn tractor with a Techumseh it also had a rod go thru the side of the block. But after many hours and several years of use.Several neighbors and realatives also had the same Massey and had all kinds on trouble with there engines. But much earlier then ours.We also had a John Deere garden tiller with a 6hp Techumseh that was worthless. It did basically the same thing you mentioned just was a dud.Dad sold the tiller and swore he would never own another Techumseh.

Seems many of them were a real POS but I know of a few that have done OK also.

Whenever I have a running issue with these I assume carb. To put it blunty the carbs they have used for at leat the last 20 years are JUNK! They take NO abuse at all, and 1/2 the time you cant clean them right. I would pull the bowl, and look for that jelled mess in there. Make sure ALL the little holes are clean in the carb nut that holds it on.

I can't help ya, but the 5hp Snow King on my snowblower is indeed a genuine, bonafide no holds barred POS! I guess that's why they are $129.00 new. When I am shoveling tomorrow the whole time I will be muttering "Tecumseh POS".

I've had a few "good" tecumsehs,(the HH120's were among the finest engines made)--but their die cast ones are usually in the "POS" category much of the time due to the carbs on them..A Tecumseh will beat a Briggs in a race on a go-kart or mini-bike,but will toss a rod faster than them too..

I have a few 5-8 HP Tecumsehs that start first or second pull even after sitting for months, and run good, never had a carb issue..but they are the exception to the rule..

After being put through the mill by a few Tecumseh's on my Compact 7M ,I tend to want to kick it when I walk by it too!..I still say Tecumseh's should not have an Indian on their blower housing for a logo--it should be SATAN! :616: .. (cant get the smileys to work?!)

That is what I've heard said about mine, along with there being valve/compression problems. It's not Tecumseh I hate, just this darn snowking.
