My 1999 JD 345 Kawasaki 20 hp water cooled FD611V-BSO1 code engine is giving me some troubles. It started this "surging" at idle rpms, and seems to have a little "missing" also. I have removed the carburetor and removes all parts...jets, main jet, nozzle, and main nozzle, both air jets, pilot jet...Soaked in carb. cleaner over night, and air blown all parts. Installed new carb . kit (sold by JD dealer.) Installed new gaskets on carb/intake side, and air intake gaskets. New s. plugs, new fuel filter, and new spring from governor/control bracket. Removed seat, rear fender, and removed gas tank, and cleaned it out. Also installed new fuel hose from tank to carb. and fuel pump.

Also adjusted the governor arm on the governor rod by putting a allen wrench in the end of governor rod and moving the rod full counter clock-wise with high speed throttle in fast position. Also adjusted the intake and exhaust vales to 0.010 at cold settings.

The results: Some (most) of the surging is gone, but there is a "miss" in the engine at idle and fast speed. It also will die (shut off) sometimes when at med, low idle range.

Anyone have the cure to this problem?

The mfg. date on the engine label is stamped....08/98.. Meaning it was assembly in August 1998.

I read on this forum or another that the plastic was replaced by metal one in late 1997. Correct me if this date in wrong.

NOTE: New air filter also. Ignition coils tested out as per specification, as fuel pump.

I believe the plastic cam gear was in the FD590V 18hp. I think the FD611V 20hp. has steel. Tractor serial # 70,000 and above OK is what I was told.

General,
What's the difference between Seafoam and Marvel Mystery Oil? I have used MMO for many years. I looked at the Seafoam website and it appears to do the same thing as MMO.

Gentlemen, problem solved. Courtesy(sp) of the federal government..EPA
Woke up in middle of night..brain went combat mode.
I own a EGZO 295cc 4 stroke gas Golf cart, that had been stalling and running poorly. After some time with a golf course mechanic, we removed the carburetor. All the latest golf cart engines, lawn mowers, garden tractors, and who knows what else...have these carburetors with the little pilot jet screw..with the black plastic tang that one can only turn the screw about 3/4 of a turn in or out. This is the California smog control law thats been in effect. I removed the black plastic tang on the golf cart carburetor, and replaced with with a small bolt with same size threads, and blocked the hole. No more trouble with the golf cart stalling or running rough.

Today... I removed the carburetor on this infamous..JD Model 345 with the Kawasaki 20 hp water cooled engine. shaved the black plastic tip off the pilot jet screw, and removed the pilot jet..or what ever it's called. Foud me a small bolt with same size threads, and plug the hole. Installed the carburetor...Wow!.. The John Deere roars to life.. idles like it came from the factory..Has more pep, go, and runs soooo smoooth..

Like we say here in my part of the country...We have so many ways to please you, you are bound to like one of them.

So, what's that jet screw thingy good for anyway? Maybe we should all take 'em out.....

Just food for thought; I believe all 87 and 89 octane gasoline in Wisconsin is sold with up to 10% ethanol and I have heard that the ethanol could cause problems with carbureted motors. I always try to use 100% gasoline in my lawn mower and snow blower which is usually the higher octane gasoline like 91 or 93 octane. I have also recently noticed that the higher octane gasoline is labeled as "recreational gasoline”. Maybe this has been discussed before on this forum but it could be part of the problem that FD611V is experiencing.
