My Tillotson list shows MT31A was built for Power Products and lists it for utility engine and built only in 1953. The MT33A is listed for Power Machinery (which may be misprint for Power Products)and listed for 1005 engine and made in 1953 and 1954. I have not found any information on these Power Products engines.

Found my tank on another engine..

I was spending some time on the interwebs looking for information on my engine, and I found this photo of another AV47 with that bigger square tank. It was not identified, so I wonder what the application would have been for?

I'm just not finding much on this tank...

Well, I got the deck bead-blasted, primed and painted over the last couple days.
I had a tough time choosing the shade of red, and I think this was close to the correct color. The only photos I had to reference were shots of old Dunlaps I saw on the web.

I'll install the wheels and start working on the handle tomorrow. I need to blast and paint the bars, but I'm not sure what color to go with. It looks like they were originally Silver or white, but I've seen red as well. I don't know...?

My Dad had a Dunlap. I spent many a day mowing lawns in the neighborhood with it. He took meticulous care of his mowers but I eventually wore it out!

If you've worked on cars and airplanes you won't have any trouble working on antique lawn equipment. Just read up a little on where technology was back in the era you want to work on. It's encouraging to me that you know what a points and condenser ignition is!

Thanks Spokes. Yeah, I've worked on a few different types of engines. The PP 2 cycle is pretty cool though. The only other 2 stroke I have experience with is a Toro snowblower with a 3.5 hp Tecumseh 2 cycle engine. I've had it for 5 years and it's never given me an ounce of trouble...:fing32:

I just found picture of 1951 Dunlap 16 inch mower. I don't own this mower. It was listed on eBay and crags list a couple of years age. Price was to high and to far away for me. Note the differences, Aluminum spikes instead of metal rake one front, center fill gas tank, screen on flywheel and no model number cat in deck. Nice mower with wrong wheels but nice original shape other wise except for a couple of the aluminum spikes broken off'

Great pictures, Bill. From what I know, the decks with the integrated front rake were the earlier ones (50'-51') and they moved to a bolt-on rake in 52'. I keep seeing different paint combinations with the engine/tank. I've seen silver with silver tank, silver with red tank and silver with yellow tank. I've also seen the whole engine painted white, with a white tank.

I'm just not sure which direction to go. This one looks fairly original (Silver w/silver tank) so I may do it this way.

Did you notice the yellow paint peeking through the silver on the gas tank in the picture?
AJ; That's actually the remnants of the starting instruction decal. Although, I have seen plenty of these tanks painted Yellow...

Well, I think I got the deck where I want it. Got the wheels installed today and the rake as well.:drunkie:

I think it looks pretty good, if you ask me...

A big change from when I first brought it home, huh??

I used a rubberized paint on the underside of the deck. I've seen others use this stuff, so I thought I'd try it to.

Looking real good!!! You have a great project mower there. Can't wait to see it finished.

That is the same mower I posted a picture of in post # 28. He had a starting price of over $125.00 and didn't get a bid. It is early Dunlap with the aluminum spikes instead of metal rake on front. Has wrong wheels but nice condition.

Re: Belated Update on my Dunlap Rotary

After working on a few other projects and just plain working, I had some time to spend on the Dunlap yesterday afternoon.
A few days ago I had a friend weld a couple cracks in the lower handle section. The elderly gentleman was using hose clamps to secure the handle while it was cracked.
I cleaned up the welds and painted the handle bars. I still need to order the Coke bottle style grips, which I probably will do today. I also painted the wheels Silver, as the photos I've seen show them as being Silver and not white.

I have to say I'm happy with the results so far, and look forward to seeing this thing run..
I put it all together and I now have a rolling chassis. Still working on finding the upper half of the engine case which is proving much more difficult than I thought it would.

I have to give a mid-way big thanks to Bill (Old LawnBoy) for all the assistance thus far in getting me parts.

The one picture has the AV-36 that I restored, but I'm not crazy about the colors, so I'll probably be redoing the fuel tank and painting it Yellow, then installing the Power Products decal I bought for it.

Couple quick updates for those who are following;

I got my new grips in the mail and promptly installed them. They fit perfectly.

Also, I bit the bullet and had my case welded. I spent way too much, but I'd like to move forward and get this done. Bill (old lawnboy) has been instrumental in helping me find parts for this engine and I have to give him a big thank you for his help.

So, after a little cleaning up of the weld, and some test fitting, I think the case is to a point where I can begin reassembly.

I'll start getting this thing reassembled in the next few days and hopefully, by the end of the month, I'll have it running...:praying:

I'm still on the hunt for the original type engine (P209) which had a 3 legged mount. But for now, I'll get it running with this P298 installed
