I haven't had much time to investigate yet but something in the gearbox broke. Hoping for a sheared key but I don't think I'm going to be that lucky. I have the blower and blade for the 317, a 9 hp walk behind craftsman and a toro single stage and right now I'm down to just the 317 with plow. Not the best thing for 12" of wet heavy snow.

Hopefully only a broken chain. Had that happen on my 112 about 10 years ago. (I pulled apart the blower I had with the 317, (before I sold it), and it was very similar to the 112 blower if I remember correctly.) Easy fix and not too expensive.

It's not the chain. It's in the right angle gearbox itself. You can turn the pulley that drives it from the tractor but where it comes out of the other side of the gearbox doesn't turn. I'll pull it apart later when I'm done plowing snow & see whats broken. Probably need a new gearbox.

You can buy just the gears if need be. Is your shear bolt intact? The shear bolt on the auger should go long before the gears in the gear box do....

That s**ks. Not gonna be cheap.

Yeah, it's the gears....just as I suspected.

Good thing I'm off work this week.

Just checked the price of the gears for the gearbox & am debating on repairing this blower or not. If this was the only problem I would just fixx it but the auger has seen better days, the mount is twisted and it's just all around in rough shape. There are blowers all over the place for $500ish. It might be easier to just replace the entire unit and put this one to rest.

Thoughts?

Now I'm really kicking myself for not picking up that 317 with blower blade & cab for 1k.

I just rebuilt my 49 blower and the first time I used it the auger stopped spinning. I thought I broke a gear or something. Took off the cover and discovered I used C-Clips that were slightly the wrong size and the shaft somehow was driven into the gear box causing the shaft key to pop out of the gear.

Too bad your situation wasn't as easy to fix as mine.

Up until it broke, how was it using the blower with the cab?
It was awesome. A face full of snow I did not get. Unlike just now when I was using the walk behind to clean up what the plow deposited in my driveway.

I'd rebuild the gearbox if I was you. My reasoning is because if I bought another one in better condition I'd strip the one you have for parts. Even if you ended up with a different setup, a rebuilt gearbox will get a decent return.

The reason I'm leaning towards a different blower is because mine is in such rough shape.

In the first picture you can see how far out of line the shaft and gearbox are and in the second picture what it did to the flex plate I made. Maybe that was the reason for the failure and I should have just used steel like the original instead of conveyor belt.

I found a blower not too far from me for $450.00 I'm not real sure what the value of these are as the asking prices are all over the board from $450-$700

I would buy the other one. It looks way nicer and also has the tall chute so you will be able to throw the snow farther. I don't think the model 49 thrower has any shear pins. I think they rely on belts to slip it seems.
