We drove 3 hours one way to buy some mowers from this scrapyard in hopes that we can use parts and keep them from being scrapped. We got 5 tractors, 4 Sears GTs and this JD 265 which is mine. It was kinda tossed onto a package deal, for $100 I couldn't let it stay there. The Everything is there, the engine shroud is full of acorns of something but I can turn the motor some, haven't made a full rotation yet though. I only have this one photo of it at the scrap yard, I will get more tomorrow. That tractor next to it was a LT155 with a hole in the block and no hood, for $100 it stayed there and met the end of it's life as a mower. Plans for this JD is if it runs or might run I may fix it up. If the engine is blown and I don't have a replacement in storage she may get parted out, I haven't decided yet. The hood is in good shape, the lower grille is broken in one spot but other than that it is in great shape. I aired up the tires when I got home about 5 hours ago and they haven't gone flat yet. I am just glad to give it a new lease on life or possibly part it and help others keep on going.

I messed with it just a little this evening. Oil looks good in the engine so I hooked some jumper cables to it and it spins over really good. Put a little gas in the intake and it trys like heck to start but it backfires through the carburetor. It acts like it is firing to early? Anyone know what this may be? It is a Kawasaki FC540V, single cylinder OHV vertical shaft. I have not messed with many Kawasaki engines.

I did some research. I am going to adjust the valves and get a new sparkplug and go from there. I am almost betting it is a bad igniter, I can get a cheap new aftermarket one for under $20. It won't be as good as a JD one but I just want to see if the engine will run and if the hydro will work and I will go from there.

It's probably not but I put one of those on my 170(same kawi engine as my 240) 2yrs ago and its still going fine. For the price difference I ordered a second one but haven't needed it.

It has to be the igniter. My JD Gator has a Kawi motor and did the same thing until i relplaced the igniter. It is a stupid design.

Made some good progress today. I adjusted the valves and installed a new sparklpug. The exhaust valve has some slack in it but not much, it's at spec now. Tried to start it and had the same issue, my igniter is bad. I remembered I have a Kawasaki 14 HP from a JD walk behind thats about as old as this 265 so I went and looked at the igniter on it. It matches so I put it on the 265. It started up and ran for a couple seconds, sounded good. I tried to get it to run but the carburetor is rusted up badly on the inside and some has been in there before because the main jet is stripped and cannot be removed. This thing is nasty, I don't think it is worth trying to rebuild so I am going to be looking for a nice used carburetor. I am just glad to hear that the engine start. I got some photos of it too.

I also gave it a quick power washing. Looks much better.

That's cool! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

I haven't been able to read the hour meter, the lens is fogged up or just really dirty on the inside. That one lonely original tire needs replaced, it is severely cracked along the sidewall, I am surprised it holds any air at all.

Hour meter just pulls out and unclips from under the dash. Check it and see how many hours are on it, cleans up fast.

Nice save, :fing32: lots of life left in that Deere

Did some minor work to it today. I greased it up and swapped out that last original tire for a nice one I had in my parts shed. No more leaky tires now, hopefully. It is looking pretty good I must say, I am really starting to like this tractor.

NICE 98!! Great save!! I want one of those tractors, have yet to find one!
